SB: Huskies drop both ends of Saturday doubleheader to UIW

HCU bats go quiet in weekend sweep at hands of rival Cardinals

SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- Houston Christian University dropped both ends of a doubleheader to rival University of the Incarnate Word, falling 12-0 and 4-1 at H-E-B Stadium on Saturday afternoon, allowing the Cardinals to sweep the weekend series.

HCU is now 15-18 overall and 2-10 in the SLC while UIW improves to 23-10 and 10-5 in the league.

The Huskies will next be in action when they host a three-game series with Nicholls at Husky Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 pm on Friday, followed by the series finale on Saturday at noon.

GAME ONE : UIW 12, HCU 0

For the second straight game in the series, the Cardinals rode one huge inning to the run-rule victory. UIW sent nine to the plate in the third inning, plating 11 runs to take control of the contest and clinch the series win. AB Garcia had two of the Huskies seven hits.

Victoria Altamirano had a two-run double and a grand slam for UIW in the fateful third, finishing the day 2-3 with two runs and six RBI to back Samantha Portillo, who scattered seven hits and fanned four.

Lyndie Swanson, the first of four HCU pitchers used, took the loss, giving up four runs in 2.1 innings to fall to 4-6 overall.

GAME TWO : UIW 4, HCU 1

The Cardinals would pick up where they left off in game one, pushing two runs across the plate in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of two hits batsmen and an error. Jillian Gutierrez provided a two-run single to plate both runners, as the hosts took the early lead they wouldn't relinquish. She would push the lead three with an RBI single up the middle.

HCU would push across their lone run of the day in the fourth. Haylie Savage tripled, and Jasie Roberts was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Kaicey Hagler followed with a sacrifice fly to pull HCU back within two, 3-1. The Cardinals would get the run back in the fifth on a solo homer by Brittany Shaw, which closed the game's scoring.

Ronni Grofman took the loss, going the distance and scattering eight hits. She allowed two unearned runs and fanned two, falling to 5-7 on the season. The Huskies managed just three hits, coming off the bats of Savage, Roberts and Maddy Bailey.

Gutierrez was 2-3 with the three RBI. Baylee Lemons went 2-3 as well to back Bella Mitchell, who tossed five innings while allowing just the three hits to go with four strikeouts.
