SB: Swanson shutout helps Huskies split with Colonels

HCU wins 4-0 in opener before dropping game two 7-1; rubber game at 12:05 pm Saturday

HOUSTON, Texas --- Houston Christian University got a brilliant shutout effort in the circle from Lyndie Swanson in the opener and went on to split a twi-night twin-bill with Nicholls State University on Friday at Husky Field. Swanson's gem gave the Huskies a 4-0 victory to start the three-game series before the Colonels rebounded with a 7-1 victory in the nightcap.

HCU goes to 16-19 overall and 3-11 in the SLC while Nicholls moves to 23-18 and 10-4.

The two teams will finish up the series with a matinee finale on Saturday. First pitch at Husky Field is slated for 12:05 pm.

GAME ONE : HCU 4, Nicholls 0

Lyndie Swanson was the highlight of the opener, tossing her 14th career shutout on just 85 pitches to improve to 5-6 on the season. The senior from Katy allowed just six hits and two walks while striking out eight, moving her to within 14 of the Top 10 alltime.

HCU got on the board in the fourth inning with the only run that Swanson would end up needing. Kaicey Hagler singled up the middle with one out, and moved to second on a bunt single by Maddy Bailey. When the throw went awry, Hagler raced all the way around to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

Bailey, now at third base, would then cross the plate on Breana Herrera's squeeze bunt, as HCU doubled it's margin.

Two more came across in the sixth for insurance. Bailey walked to start the inning and moved to second when Heidi Maytum got plunked by a full-count pitch. Riley Martin singled through the right side to load the bases, and AB Garcia followed with a sharp single up the middle to score two and push HCU's lead to 4-0.

Riley Martin was 2-2 with a walk to lead the Huskies, who had just six hits off Nicholls starter Audrey McNeil (9-11) and reliever Molly Yoo, who each gave up a pair of runs. Maddy Bailey was 1-2 with a walk and two runs scored, while Garcia was 1-4 with the two-run single.

GAME TWO : Nicholls 7, HCU 1

In game two, the Colonels wasted no time in getting on the board. Reagan Heflin doubled to left center with one out and stole third. Erin Krause would then coax a walk, and Heflin would then sneak across home whilst Krause took second. Karause would moved to second on a single by Abby Anderson, and then scored on a single by McKenzie Champagne for a 2-0 lead.

HCU got one back in the bottom of the frame. AB Garcia led off with a triple, and Haylie Savage was hit by a pitch and stole second. Jasie Roberts was then hit as well, loading the bases with no one out. After Hagler flew out, Maddy Bailey grounded out to short to bring in Garcia, but that was all the Huskies would end up with, trailing 2-1 after one.

Champagne added an RBI groundout in the third to make the score 3-1, and Heflin had an RBI single and then scored on a Krause single to make the score 5-1 in the fourth. The Colonels would tack on a couple of extras in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Ronni Grofman went five innings for the Huskies, allowing seven hits and five runs while matching a career-high with eight punchouts in falling to 5-8 on the season.

The Huskies got just four hits off Nicholls starter Averi Paden, who went the distance and allowed just the one run with three K's to run her record to 7-2 on the year. Champagne went 3-4 with three RBI while Heflin was 2-4 with an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases.
