SB: HCU undone by UIW in series opener

Huskies and Cardinals finish three-game set with noon twin-bill Saturday

SAN ANTONIO ---  Houston Christian University fell in the series opener at University of Incarnate Word, dropping a 9-1 decision at H-E-B Stadium Friday afternoon. The hosts put up seven runs in the second inning and never looked back in a game stopped after the sixth inning.

UIW got things going quickly in the second innings, with Avalon Sanchez leading off with a solo homer to right center. With one out, the Cardinals would string together four straight singles to score two more runs and a walk to Dariane Cram loaded the bases, knocking Ronni Grofman out of the circle.

Aaliyah Garcia then got the big knock of the frame, a two-run double on the first pitch she saw from reliever Addy Prasifka, making the score 5-0 Cardinals. The lead would grow to seven on a bunt sinlge and sacrifice fly later in the inning.

HCU tried to get something going in the third. Juls Garcia singled to left and AB Garcia followed with a single to third base to put two on with no outs. Haylie Savage then lined a shot to second that hit AB Garcia for the first out, leaving runners at first and second. After a strikeout of Jasie Roberts, Kaicey Hagler followed with a single to left field, scoring Savage, but that was all the Huskies would muster in the inning.

Incarnate Word would tack on single runs in the fifth and sixth, the final of which came on an errant throw to allow the game-ending run to cross home.

HCU had just four hits on the afternoon, one each by the Garcia's, Hagler and Ronni Grofman. AB Garcia stole her 11th base of the season to take over sole possession of sixth on the career charts.

Grofman was saddled with the loss, giving up six runs on five hits to see her record move to 5-6 on the season. Prasifka went 4.1 innings in relief, scattering eight hits and allowing two unearned runs.

Larissa Jacquez was the star for UIW, tossing six innings and allowing just four hits while fanning 11 Huskies. Maddison Guillen went 3-3 to lead a 13-hit offense for the hosts, now 21-10 overall and 8-5 in the SLC. Cram and Garcia each had two hits and two RBI while Ryleigh Mata and Ayla Gonzales each had two hits as well.

HCU is now 15-17 overall and 2-8 in the Southland. The two teams will finish off the three-game set with a noon doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
