SB: Huskies thwarted by McNeese in Saturday twin-bill

HCU falls in nine innings in back-end of pair; returns to Husky Field for final regular season home games next weekend

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University gave league-leading McNeese State University all it could handle on Saturday before ultimately falling 6-3, 5-4 in a doubleheader at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond. The Huskies dropped the back-end of the pair in nine innings, as the hosts pushed their lead to three games in the league standings with just six to play.

HCU fall to 17-24 overall and 4-14 in the SLC while McNeese is now 33-15 and 17-1. The Huskies will play their final home games of the regular season next weekend when they host Northwestern State University, who will hit Husky Field at 4-14 in the Southland as well.

The two teams will play a twi-night double-dip on Friday to be followed by the "Senior Day" series finale on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE : McNeese 6, HCU 3

The Huskies jumped on the board two batters into the contest, as Haylie Savage cranked her seventh homer of the season, a solo blast to give HCU the early lead. That was shortlived however, as McNeese returned the favor with a pair of runs off a Alexi Dibbley two-run blast in the bottom of the frame.

HCU would tie things up in the third, as Savage reached on a fielder's choice that was accompanied by an error which allowed Juls Garcia to score. Again, the Cowgirls responded, and again it was Dibbley, singling up the middle to bring in Corine Poncho and reestablish the one-run margin.

Jackie Jessup would double to right center in the fourth to chase home Maddy Bailey, tying things up once more. But just as in previous frames, the Pokes would get that run back and another as Crislyne Moreno would score on a passed ball and Bella Perez came around on a Mariana Torres double to right center, giving McNeese a 5-3 lead. In the sixth, it was Torres again doubling home a run, this time to left to score Reese Reyna with the final tally of the game.

The Huskies managed just four hits off three McNeese pitchers. Savage finished 1-3 with the first-inning dinger matching her career-high set last year. Jessup also went 1-3 with an RBI and Maddy Bailey finished 1-1 with a run scored and two walks.

Lyndie Swanson went the distance, allowing 10 hits and six runs while fanning four to fall to 6-7 on the season.

Dibbley led the Pokes at the dish and in the circle. She went four innings and allowed two runs on three hits, and aided her cause with the homer amongst a 3-3, three-RBI day. Marianna Torres went 3-4 with two RBI and Shaelyn Sanders picked up her second save of the season

GAME TWO : McNeese 5, HCU 4 (9 innings)

McNeese would cross the pay station first in the second game, plating two runs in the opening frame as Rylie Bouvier stole home before an RBI double brought around Alexis Dibbley with run number two. The Cowgirls got a sacrifice fly from Chloe Gomez in the second to open up a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies put a big crooked number up in the third, pushing across four in the inning to capture the lead. Juls Garcia singled to lead off the inning, and with one out stole second. Haylie Savage singled to center to put runners on the corners and then stole second. Jasie Roberts followed with a walk to juice the pillows, and Kaicey Hagler then provided a two-run double to left center field, forcing a McNeese pitching change.

Maddy Bailey greeted the new hurler with a single up the middle to drive in Roberts, and Jessup followed suit with an RBI single of her own to score Hagler and put the Huskies on top, 4-3. Riley Martin would walk to put a runner on all the bases and force a second pitching change of the stanza. McNeese brought on Shaelyn Sanders for the third time in the series and she promptly forced an inning-ending double-play to end the Huskies fourth.

The Cowgirls didn't waste much time getting rid of the HCU lead, as three straight singles to begin the bottom of the third were followed by a bases-loaded pass to Bella Perez knotted the game at four apiece. Katy Janes would limit the damage however, getting a fielder's choice and a strikeout to end the threat and keep the game tied up.

HCU put another rally together in the fourth, getting runners to second and third with one out, but couldn't push anything across. The two teams would then trade empty frames until the bottom of the ninth, when McNeese loaded the bases with one out and Reese Reyna coaxed a walk to bring in the game-winner.

Haylie Savage recorded her second career four-hit game, going 4-5 with a run scored to lead HCU. Juls Garcia went 2-4 with a run scored and Hagler was 1-3 with two RBI. Janes went 8.1 innings for the Huskies, falling to 4-4 on the season.

Dibbley, Poncho and Bouvier each had two hits for the Cowgirls.

Sanders picked up her league-leading 16th win with 6.2 innings of three-hit relief and eight punchouts. She appeared in all three games of the series, notching two victories and a save.
