HOUSTON – NO. 3 seed HCU began the first day of the Southland Conference Beach Volleyball Championships with a win over No. 6 Southeastern before falling to No. 2 seed Boise State later in the afternoon at Third Coast Volleyball Club.
In their opening matchup, the Huskies (11-22) picked up their first point of a 3-0 win over the Lady Lions (12-18) at the fours with
Mary Alper and
Tatum Lockhardt earning a 21-14, 21-12 victory.
Kristin Gilmour and
Rachel Heilbrun then picked up the second point playing as the team's No. 2 pair, winning 23-21, 21-13. The decisive point was earned by No. 5 pair
Kylann Griffith and
Lauren Vickery thanks to a 21-16, 21-11 final.
In the final dual of the day, Boise State (30-11) downed the Huskies by a 3-1 final. The first point went to the Broncos with Roraianna Chartier and Lily Patock defeating Alper and Lockhardt, 22-20, 21-17. At the twos, Gilmour and Heilbrun won their second match of the day in two sets, 21-19, 21-17. Boise then won at the threes before the final point of the dual came at the fives. Boise State picked up the point with a hard-fought two-set decision, winning 26-24, 21-16 over Griffith and Vickery.
HCU is set to play an elimination match on Saturday, Apr .20, at 12:00 p.m. against the winner of a 9:00 a.m. elimination match between Nicholls and New Orleans.
