HOUSTON, Texas – The Huskies ran into the best offense in the Southland in game one getting run-ruled in seven innings, 2-14, at Husky Field. HCU was held to just five hits in the series opener while committing five errors and allowing runs in each inning.
The Nicholl's offense got off to a fast start posting three runs in the top of the first inning and four runs in the top of the second inning. After the Colonels added two runs in the top of the third inning, the Huskies got on the board in the bottom half of the frame when
Lane Sparks drew a four-pitch walk and stole second base before scoring on a single to center field off the bat of
Trevor Roper. The Huskies allowed a run in each of the fourth through sixth inning before
Tyler LaRue hit a single through the left side leading off the bottom of the sixth inning. LaRue advanced to third on a double by
William Jewell three-pitches later, and scored on an RBI groundout by
Luke Bard to notch HCU's last run of the game. Nicholls closed out game one scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the series opener, 2-14.
The Huskies (13-23, 6-7 SLC) were led by
Trevor Roper going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Tyler LaRue went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run while Jewell went 1-for-3 with a double.
Katcher Halligan was the only other player for HCU to record a hit going 1-for-2 with a walk.
Ethan Coronel (0-3) was tagged with the loss pitching .1 innings to start the game, allowing three earned runs on three hits with a walk.
Nolan Wilson pitched one frame of relief giving up one run, no earned runs, on two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Trent Baker saw his first action of the season on the mound tossing recording the final two outs of the game.
Nicholls (25-14, 8-5 SLC) was led by Parker Coddou going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs. Conference leader, Edgar Alvarez, went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and two runs while Basiel Williams went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, five RBIs and scored a run. Jacob Mayers (3-0) started the game for the Colonels, pitching five innings while allowing one earned run on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts. Dallis Moran closed out the game pitching a scoreless inning giving up a hit.
The three-game series will continue on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at Husky Field. The series will conclude with game three on Sunday at 2 p.m.
