SB: Huskies stymied by Bearkats in pitcher's duel

Nine-game stretch run begins in Lake Charles this weekend

HOUSTON, Texas --- Houston Christian University dropped it's final non-conference tilt of the year, falling 3-0 to Sam Houston State in a pitcher's duel at Husky Field on Tuesday evening.

The Bearkats struck quickly, as Elia Hebel cranked the third pitch of the contest over the wall in right center field. SHSU would then load the bases, and Ellie Grill would score on a wild pitch to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

From there, it was all goose eggs on the scoreboard the rest of the way until the final frame. After walking two with two out in the second inning, Katy Janes would get out of the jam by getting Julia Herzinger on a fielder's choice to end the frame. The senior from Huffman would then retire 12 of the next 14 batters she faced until the seventh.

She was matched by Sam's Abigail Young, who was strong for seven innings, scattering seven hits and fanning six on 120 pitches. Sam Houston would scratch across one more on a sacrifice fly by Allie Saville that scored Grill with the third Bearkat run.

Janes went the distance and gave up just five hits and three runs while throwing 124 pitches, falling to 4-3 on the season. Tabitha Burnett matched her career high of three hits to pace the Huskies offense, while AB Garcia went 2-4 with her 12th stolen base of the season.

Young improved to 4-5 on the year. Hebel finished 2-4 with the homer and Grill scored the other two runs for Sam Houston State, now 17-25 on the season.

HCU falls to 17-21 on the season, and now embarks on a nine-game stretch run in conference play. The Huskies take to I-10 for the trip to Lake Charles this weekend, where they will face three-time defending Southland Conference champion and current league leader McNeese.

The series at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond will start with a single game at 6 pm on Friday evening, followed by a 1 pm doubleheader on Saturday.
