FRISCO, Texas --- Houston Christian University's
Dominic Capriotti has been named the 2023-24 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year. He is the second HCU player to earn the honor since the Huskies joined the league in 2013-14.
The 6'3 guard was voted the top freshman by the SLC's head coaches and sports information directors. He was the lone freshman in the Southland to be chosen for any accolade.
Capriotti averaged 7.5 points and 2.1 rebounds on the season, shooting 38.5% from the three-point line while averaging 24.5 minutes in 26 games.
His numbers increased in SLC action, as he shot 39.4% from the arc and averaged 9.1 points while playing 29.4 minutes per game.
Two games into the conference slate Capriotti was inserted into the starting lineup. Over the course of the final 16 games of the season, he averaged 9.8 points per game while grabbing 2.4 boards and shooting 38.5% from distance. He scored in double-digits in nine of those 16 games.
He hit a career-best five three-pointers in a game twice on the season, first versus Lamar on January 20, and again on February 17 at Southeastern. That night in Hammond, Louisiana he also set a single-game best with 19 points as well as a career-best five assists.
Capriotti finished the season second on the club with 47 made three's, closing the campaign with 195 points and 54 rebounds.
The Tempe, Arizona native is the third HCU player in school history to earn Freshman of the Year honors. He joins SLC 2017-18 Frosh of the Year David Caraher and Chad Hartley, who was the Big State Conference Freshman of the Year following the 1995-96 season.
