SB: Huskies and Islanders trade shutouts, split twi-night twin-bill

Good Friday finale now represents rubber game of the series

HOUSTON, Texas --- Houston Christian University and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi traded shutouts on Thursday, splitting a Southland Conference doubleheader at Husky Field. The Islanders took game one behind a two-hitter from Primrose Aholelei, while the Huskies captured the nightcap as Ronni Grofman scattered five hits.

HCU is now 15-14 overall and 2-6 in the SLC while TAMUCC is 18-11 and 6-5. The two rivals will meet in a Good Friday series finale which now represents the rubber game of the three-game set.

First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 pm and the game can be seen on ESPN+.

GAME ONE : Islanders 7, Huskies 0

Primrose Aholelei got all the  offensive support she would need as the Islanders erupted for three runs in the top of the first frame. With the sacks full, Kimane Rogron doubled to right center, clearing the bases for a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, it was Rogron again, smacking a ball that glanced off the top of the wall and over in center field for a solo homer, making the score 4-0.

TAMUCC would tack on three more in the seventh on RBI singles from Monee Montiall, Crystal Davila and Sydney Hoyt.

Aholelei, the 2023 SLC Pitcher of the Year, was in complete control throughout, allowing just a third-inning bunt single to AB Garcia and a leadoff single in the fifth by Jackie Jessup. She walked three and fanned nine in improving to 12-5 overall.

Rogron went 3-4 with the homer and four RBI, while Montilla, Davilla and Paolina Baez each had two hits.

Lyndie Swanson (4-4) was saddled with the loss, going three innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Addy Prasifka went the rest of the way, giving up three runs on nine hits with three K's.

AB Garcia went 1-3 with a stolen base as the lone bright spot offensively for HCU.

GAME TWO : Huskies, 3, Islanders 0

For the second straight conference series, it was Ronni Grofman tossing a gem to help the Huskies salvage the opening doubleheader. Like she had done last Friday at Southeastern, Grofman mowed through the Islanders, giving up just five hits with two walks while throwing 101 pitches in evening her record at 5-5.

The Huskies got their offense in the fourth frame, putting up a three-spot that made good for the duration. A one-out triple by Kaicey Hagler was followed by an RBI double from Maddy Bailey. With two outs, Jackie Jessup doubled to center field to score Bailey, and she would then come home on a sharp single to center by Tabitha Burnett.

TAMUCC put together lone threat in the fifth, loading the bases with one out and the heart of the order coming up. Grofman would reach back for huge strikeouts of Sidney Campion and Taniece Tyson to get out of the jam.

Bailey and Jessup each went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Huskies. AB Garcia went 1-3 and stole a base for the second straight game, as she pushed her hitting streak to 11 games. The stolen base was the 33rd of her career, and moved into a tie for sixth place all-time with Shana Martin.
