SB: Huskies succumb to final inning rally as Islanders take series

Pitcher's duel goes to Corpus; HCU back in action Tuesday at UH

HOUSTON, Texas --- Houston Christian University dropped a pitcher's duel with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Good Friday series finale, falling 3-2 to the Islanders at Husky Field. HCU fell behind early, then tied things up before a seventh-inning rally allowed TAMUCC to sneak out with the victory and win the series.

For the second time in the series, it was the Islanders who jumped out in front in the opening frame. Alina Jasso walked and moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a wild pitch. Kimane Rogron walked before Taniece Tyson popped to short for the first out. Monee Montilla then coaxed a free pass to load the bases.

Paolina Baez would follow with another base on balls to score Jasso, and knock HCU starter Katy Janes out of the contest. Crystal Davilla greeted her with a sacrifice fly to score Rogron and make the score 2-0.

Swanson would settle in, and would retire 15 straight batters before a walk by Tyson in the sixth. Meanwhile, the Huskies had knotted things up, courtesy of a leadoff single in the fourth by Jasie Roberts, which was followed by a towering home run to left field by Kaicey Hagler, her third dinger of the season.

The Huskies would threaten in the sixth, loading the sacks with two outs, but couldn't push across a run. TAMUCC would take advantage, and got its first three hits of the game in the seventh. The final of the three came with two on, as Felixia Hinojasa pulled a ball just inside the third base bag to score Davila from third and give the Islanders the lead for good.

Swanson and TAMUCC's Primrose Aholelei put on a pitching show. Swanson (4-5) went six innings in relief, giving up just the three hits and one run while wlaking one and fanning four. Ronni Grofman got the final two outs in relief. On the other side, Aholelei won her second game of the series, going the distance and allowing three hits with two runs and seven strikeouts on 100 pitches.

Hagler was 1-3 with the homer and two RBI while Roberts and Jackie Jessup collected the other hits for HCU.

Davila went 1-2 with an RBI, while Baez and Hinojosa each drove in one for the Islanders, now 19-11 and 7-5 in Southland action.

HCU sees its record evened at 15-15 on the season, and is now 2-7 in SLC play. The Huskies will return to the diamond on Tuesday night across town when they take on University of Houston at 6 pm.
