SB: Huskies nipped by Lions in series finale

HCU returns home for Easter week series with rival TAMUCC on Thursday/Friday

HAMMOND, La. --- Houston Christian University dropped the series finale to Southeastern Louisiana University on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-0 at North Oak Park. The Huskies, who knocked the Lions out of first place with their second game win on Friday night, fell into a two-run hole in the first and never recovered.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first for the Huskies, the Lions would put a crooked number up quickly in their half. Ka'Lyn Watson would walk, but was thrown out trying to steal second. Chloe Magee and Maria Detillier then earned free passes as well to put two on, and end the afternoon for HCU starter Katy Janes.

Lyndie Swanson came on and was greeted by a double to right by 2023 SLC Player of the Year Bailey Krolczyk that plated Magee to give SLU a 1-0 lead. Maddie Watson followed with an RBI groundout to score Detillier and the Lions led 2-0 after an inning of play.

Swanson would work a solid 3.2 innings of relief for the Huskies. She allowed just three hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts, working out of a third inning jam to keep HCU in it. It was her second appearance of the weekend, which moved her within one of third place on the all-time leaderboard.

Ronni Grofman went 2-3 for the Huskies at the plate, and tossed the final two innings, giving up two hits and one run. Katy Janes suffered the loss, falling to 4-2 on the season.

After not getting out of the first inning herself in game two on Friday, DuBois was in control for the majority of the series finale. She allowed just six hits, and ended up stranding two runners in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings to prevent any comeback attempt by the Huskies. She fanned seven in running her record to 8-3.

The Lions managed just five hits off the Huskies, with Krolczyk going 2-2 with two RBI. Detillier was 1-2 with two runs scored for SLU, which improves to 24-7 overall and 7-2 in Southland play but remains in second as Lamar completed a sweep of Texas A&M-Commerce to stay one game ahead in the standings.

HCU falls to 14-13 overall and 1-5 in Southland play. The Huskies will host rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next THURSDAY and FRIDAY in a three-game series at Husky Field.
