SB: Huskies overwhelm Mastodons in season opener at Stinger Classic

HCU rallies from down five in first with 14-hit onslaught

Montgomery, Ala. --- Houston Christian University found itself in a five-run hole after the first, then overwhelmed Purdue University Fort Wayne the rest of the way to claim an 11-6 victory on the first day of the Stinger Classic hosted by Alabama State University at Barbara Williams Softball Complex. The Huskies put together two five-run innings of their own bolstered by a 14-hit attack and a marvelous relief outing from Lyndie Swanson to win their season opener for the fourth straight year.

The Mastodons put five on the board in the first, all coming with two outs. PFW would get four straight walks before collecting its first hit of the game, a two-run single by Brayden Lickey that drove HCU starter Katy Janes out of the game. PFW would put two more on the board immediately following the pitching change, staking themselves to a seemingly comfortable 5-0 lead.

HCU would get on the board in the second inning, as Ronni Grofman cranked a one-out double to center and advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a single by Maggie Childs to left center to draw the score to 5-1.

In the fourth, the floodgates began to open, as the Huskies put up a five-spot. Four straight hits were put in the book, with a two-run double by Childs and an RBI double from Jackie Jessup pulling HCU to within one, 5-4. AB Garcia then reached with Jessup came across on a fielding error to knot things at five. Not done, Garcia would later score on an RBI single by Maddy Bailey, and the Huskies had completely turned the tables, taking a 6-5 lead.

The deluge continued in the fifth as the Huskies put up another crooked number. Back-to-back doubles by Grofman and Childs made the score 7-5, and Jessup drove in Childs to push the lead to three. Jessup again would score on an error, and AB Garcia would later come home on a wild pitch after a Haylie Savage walk. Maddy Bailey then capped things off with a monstrous blast to center field, her first homer as a Husky giving HCU an 11-5 cushion.

After giving up the single in the first, Swanson would set down 14 batters in a row until a two-out double by Lickey in the sixth. In the seventh, the Mastodons put together their first real threat since the first, as three of the first four hitters reached with hits. Swanson would then strike out two of the final three batters, leaving the bases juiced to finish off the season-opening win.

HCU pounded out 14 hits in the win, with Maggie Childs leading the five-player multi-hit parade going 3-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI. Maddy Bailey went 3-5 with the homer and three RBI in her first game after sitting out all of last season following shoulder surgery.

Jackie Jessup went 2-4 with two RBI and two runs, and Ronni Grofman and AB Garcia each had two hits as well.

Swanson went 6.1 innings in relief of starter Janes. She gave up six hits and just one unearned run, walking one and fanning five.

Brayden Lickey went 2-3 with two RIB for the Mastodons (0-1). Starting pitcher Gracie Brinkerhoff suffered the defeat, lasting 3.1 innings while surrendering eight hits and six runs.

The Huskies have two games scheduled for Saturday, beginning with an early 9 am matchup with Western Carolina. HCU returns to the diamond again at 1 pm to take on host Alabama State.
