SB: Huskies split pair at Stinger Classic; final games cancelled due to weather

HCU falls in extras to Western Carolina before knocking off host Hornets

MONTGOMERY, Ala. --- Houston Christian University earned a split of a pair of games on Saturday in Alabama State University's Stinger Classic at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. The Huskies fell 6-5 in extra innings to Western Carolina in their 9 am game, then rebounded for a 4-3 win over the host Hornets in their afternoon tilt.

The final two games on Sunday against Mississippi Valley State and Austin Peay State have been cancelled along with the remainder of the Classic, due to weather.

The Huskies, 2-1 on the season, will be in action again next weekend when they travel to participate in the ACU Tournament hosted by Abilene Christian University.

GAME ONE vs. Western Carolina:

The Huskies fell behind in the first frame for the second straight game, but just as the night before, came right back quickly. After making a tremendous defensive play in the top of the inning, Kaicey Hagler provided the offense in the bottom of the frame, launching a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left to give HCU the lead 2-1.

In the third, the Huskies would plate three more. Haylie Savage and Maddy Bailey each drew one-out walks and Ronni Grofman's grounder to third was thrown away, allowing both runners to score. Keely Castillo then provided a solid single to center to push Grofman across the pay station for a 5-1 HCU lead.

Western Carolina would push across a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Sydney Dirks, and then in the sixth, a two-out double from Savannah Baldwin cleared the bases to knot the score at five.

The game would move to extra innings with international tie-breaker rules in effect. The Catamounts placed Jeralynn Wells on second base, and she would come around to score on an error to give WCU a 6-5 lead.

Jackie Jessup was the runner on second in the bottom half of the inning for HCU. Jasie Roberts laid down a bunt for an infield single, but Jessup was nailed at third trying to advance. WCU's Maya McPherson put down the tag at third then immediately relayed a throw to second where she caught Roberts trying to move up, thereby ending the HCU rally before it started.

AB Garcia went 2-3 for the Huskies with two more stolen bases, giving her four on the season. Keely Castillo went 2-4 with an RBI, while Hagler had the homer and two ribbies.

Addy Prasifka took the loss in relief, giving up four unearned runs in three innings on three hits. Kynleigh Evans went a strong five innings in her first collegiate start, scattering seven hits and two unearned runs while striking out three.

Baldwin led the Catamounts (2-1) with two hits and three RBI. Lily Bell and Taylor Waitley also added two hits to make a winner of Taylor Norton, who gave up three hits and no runs in 4.1 innings.

GAME TWO at Alabama State:

The second game of the day saw the Huskies finally get on the board first. Haylie Savage knocked a one-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Maddy Bailey then brought her across the plate with a groundout to second.

That lead was short-lived, as Alabama State pushed across two runs in their half of the opening frame. Kindal DeRamus singled then stole second before coming home on a muffed play at first on a grounder by Kendall Smiley. Smiley advanced to second on a sacrifice and then came home on a Brooke Ramsey double to left center, giving the Hornets the lead 2-1.

HCU would regain the lead, this time for good, in the top of the third. Jasie Roberts led off with a single and moved up a bag on a fielder's choice by Juls Garcia. Both would then advance a base on a wild pitch before a double from Haylie Savage brought them home. Savage moved up on the throw and then would score herself on a sacrifice fly from by Bailey, handing HCU a 4-2 cushion.

Ronni Grofman would hold the Hornets at bay for the most part, giving up just one more run in the fourth. She also got two stellar plays in the field resulting in outs at the plate.

The first came in the fifth after a double off the wall by Alexia Denby, Alana Scott was gunned down on a tremendous relay from AB Garcia to Kaicey Hagler to Jasie Roberts to cut down the runner at home.

The next inning, the Huskies again managed to sting the Hornets with a big defensive play. This time, a single up the middle by Smiley resulted in a straight missile by AB Garcia to Roberts at home to tag out Jaeda Gardner and preserve the lead.

Grofman went the distance and ended the game scattering 11 hits and three runs, two earned while fanning three for her first victory of the season.

Savage went 2-3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI and Keely Castillo went 2-3 as well for the Huskies, who managed just six hits in the game.

DeRamus, Smiley, Ramsey and Gardner all had two hits for Alabama State, now 0-2 on the season. Charity Bibbs suffered the loss, going seven innings and striking out two while allowing four earned runs.
