SB: HCU splits a pair on Day 1 at ACU Tournament

Huskies hammer out 13 hits in rout of Marist; fall to host Wildcats in second game

ABILENE, Texas --- Houston Christian University split a pair of games on the first day of the ACU Tournament at Poly Wells Field. The Huskies hammered out 13 hits in an 8-2 win over Marist in the opener of the tourney, then fell to the host Wildcats 7-1 in the afternoon matinee.

The Huskies, now 3-2 on the season, are scheduled to play twice on Saturday. HCU will again face Marist in their opening contest, this time at noon. That game will be followed immediately by a first-ever encounter with the Lobos of the University of New Mexico at 2:30 pm.

GAME ONE vs. MARIST:

The Huskies put single runs on the board in four consecutive innings, then broke the game open with a three-spot in the sixth. Jasie Roberts got things going in the second with a well-placed poke to right field, a triple that scored Jackie Jessup, who had doubled one batter prior.

In the second, AB Garcia would loop a liner over the top of a drawn in outfield in left. The ball kicked to the corner allowing the speedy centerfielder to come all the way around with an inside-the-park dinger, her first career homer, giving HCU a 2-0 advantage.

Single runs again would cross the pay station in both the fourth and fifth in nearly the same fashion. In the fourth, Jackie Jessup lined her second double of the game to left field, and back-to-back sacrifice bunts from Roberts and Juls Garcia would bring her home. In the sixth, it was Savage cranking a double to the gap in left center, then coming across the dish after consecutive sacrifice bunts from Maddy Bailey and Ronni Grofman to make the score 4-0.

In the sixth, the Huskies hung a crooked number on the board, plating three runs to break the game open. Juls Garcia reached on a one-out double to right field and AB Garcia pushed her around the bases with a single and a throwing error. Garcia would come home when Savage smashed a ball off the left field wall for her second double of the game, and the junior third baseman would later score when Maddy Bailey landed in a short run-down between first and second.

Savage would also provide the last run in the top of the seventh when she drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Roberts for the final tally.

Katy Janes went six innings, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth before giving way with two runs in and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh. Addy Prasifka came on to record two pop-ups and a fly out to end the victory for Janes, who scattered seven hits and fanned 11, her first-ever double-digit strikeout performance.

The Huskies pounded out 13 hits in the game, with four multi-hit efforts in the lineup. Savage went 3-3 with two doubles, two runs, two walks and two RBI, while AB Garcia also notched three hits, including the first career dinger. Jackie Jessup was 2-4 with two doubles and two runs, and Jasie Roberts closed out the quartet with an RBI triple as part of her 2-3 outing.

Marist, playing for the first time this season, was led by Maddie Pleasants and Isabella Manory, each with two hits. Haley Ahr had a two-run double in the final frame to provide the only scoring. Kiley Myers took the loss, lasting 4.1 innings and giving up seven hits and four runs

GAME TWO at ABILENE CHRISTIAN:

The fortunes changed in the second game of the day, as the Huskies couldn't muster anything offensively. ACU jumped on top on an RBI triple by Kaydee Bennett, driving in Emma Rote for the games first run in the third.

The Huskies came right back in the top of the fourth. Keely Castillo doubled and moved to third on a groundout by Ronni Grofman. She would then score when a ball up the middle by Maggie Childs for an infield single, tying the score at one apiece.

Abilene Christian broke the game open in the bottom of the frame however, scoring six times. RBI singles by Rote and Olivia Marble preceded Bennett's second triple of the contest, scoring both ahead of her before coming on in on a throwing error at third base.

Castillo had two of the four hits for the Huskies. Lyndie Swanson suffered her first loss, as she wouldn't make it out of the fourth inning. She gave up eight hits and seven runs while striking out four, evening her mark at 1-1 on the season. Addy Prasifka came on to throw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Talia Neilsen went to 1-1 with the complete game victory, striking out six. Bennett went 3-4 with two triples and three RBI, while Rote went 2-3 with two runs scored for the Wildcats, now 1-5 in the early going of 2024.
