SB: Second day at ACU Tournament sees a second split

HCU falls to Marist before getting past New Mexico; Huskies face host ACU to close tournament on Sunday

ABILENE, Texas --- For the second straight day, Houston Christian University earned a split of a pair of games at the ACU Tournament hosted by Abilene Christian University. The Huskies dropped the opener to Marist College 6-3 before rebounding to claim a 3-1 victory over the University of New Mexico.

The Huskies, now 4-3 on the season, will finish off play in the tournament on Sunday, facing off against host Abilene Christian University for the second time in the tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.

GAME ONE vs. MARIST:

The Red Foxes turned the tables on HCU from one day before, hanging six on the board in the first and then fending off several HCU rallies the rest of the way.

Miah McDonald had an RBI triple, and Isabella Manory and Taylor Anderson each added RBI singles, as Marist knocked out HCU freshman starter Kynleigh Evans in the first frame with the crooked number.

Lyndie Swanson came on in relief and held the Foxes at bay while the Huskies tried to rally. Jasie Roberts cranked her first homer of the season in the bottom of the second, a mash off the scoreboard that got the Huskies on the scoreboard.

HCU would tag on another run in the fourth with two gone. Roberts walked and moved to second on a single to center by Jackie Jessup. Breana Herrera then brought in Roberts with a poke to right, closing the gap to 6-2. Keely Castillo would do the same one inning later to almost the exact same spot, scoring Haylie Savage to cut the deficit in half, 6-3 with two at-bats remaining.

The Huskies would mount one last push in the seventh, putting two runners on with two outs, but couldn't push anything across in dropping to 3-3 on the season.

Jasie Roberts and AB Garcia led the HCU offense with two hits apiece. Roberts had her first dinger of the year and scored twice, while Garcia added her fifth stolen base of the campaign.

Kynleigh Evans suffered the loss in her first collegiate decision in the circle. Swanson went 6.2 scoreless innings in relief scattering eight hits with two K's. She moved into the Top 10 all-time at HCU in innings pitched with 390.2 for her career, and is now also in fourth place in all-time games pitched for the Huskies.

Marist got its first win of the season to improve to 1-2. Anna Sidlowski earned the victory, going the distance and allowing seven hits and three runs with four K's. She was aided by a trio of players with three hits, Miah McDonald, Haley Ohr and Sophia Recrosio.

GAME TWO vs. NEW MEXICO:

The Huskies rebounded in game two, as a solid outing in the circle by Ronni Grofman earned HCU a 3-1 win over New Mexico in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

HCU jumped out in front with two runs in the first inning. AB Garcia led off with a single and stole second before a Haylie Savage walk. Both runners would move up a base on a wild pitch, and with one out, Jasie Roberts lined a single up the middle two score both and give HCU a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

In the fifth, the Huskies plated an insurance run, and again it was AB Garcia and Savage getting things moving. Garcia doubled to left-center, and moved to third on a groundout to first by Savage. Keely Castillo then pushed a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Garcia for a 3-0 HCU advantage.

That would be all Grofman needed to improve to 2-0 on the season. She would work out of two-runners aboard jams in the third, fifth and sixth innings, allowing her only run in the seventh before retiring the side. She gave up just five hits, and worked around seven free passes while fanning six.

AB Garcia went 2-3 with two runs and a stolen base, while Jasie Roberts was 1-3 with the two RBI.

Rachael Hathoot went 2-4 to lead the Lobos, now 2-8 on the season. McKenna Guest dropped to 2-4 overall in the circle, going six innings and allowing five hits and three runs.
