SB: Evans picks up first collegiate win as HCU clips Kansas City

Swanson puts out seventh inning fire in relief as Huskies go 2-1 in Classic

HOUSTON --- A seventh-inning fire was extinguished by senior Lyndie Swanson, preserving the first collegiate victory for freshman Kynleigh Evans, as Houston Christian University capped off the Husky Classic with a 2-1 win over University of Missouri-Kansas City on Sunday afternoon.

Making her home debut in the circle, Evans was brilliant, spinning 6.1 innings and allowing just seven hits and one unearned run while walking one and fanning two. She worked out of a two-on, none-out pickle in the fifth, getting consecutive ground-outs and a fly-out to hold a 1-0 lead.

UMKC would put one last rally together in the seventh with Sydney Nichols and Derika Castillo getting things started with consecutive singles to lead off the frame. Evans reached into the tank for a big strikeout of Amelia Fitzgerald for the first out, but Epsy Daniels then reached via error to put a Roo on every base. Abby Husak followed with a single to left to plate Kansas City's first run and cut the lead in half, as well as keep the bases juiced.

Swanson came on and immediately forced Kadin Vire into a fielder's choice to third, with Haylie Savage calmly making the pick and throw to home to force Castillo for the second out of the inning. Kansas City three-hole hitter Katie Noble loomed, but Swanson got her on a come-backer to the mound to complete the thrilling victory. The six-pitch outing by Swanson earned her the save, her first of the season and third of her career.

HCU took the early 1-0 lead in the second, as Kaicey Hagler walked and was brought around on a double to right field by Breana Herrera.

The Huskies tacked on what turned out to be the decisive run in the game in the sixth. Savage led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jasie Roberts. Hagler then grounded to third base and Savage took off for third on the throw across the diamond. A return throw from first to third trying to cut down Savage then went awry and into foul territory, allowing Savage to score for a 2-0 HCU lead.

Savage and Herrera both went 1-3, with Herrera picking up an RBI. Jasie Roberts and Juls Garcia were each 1-2 as the Huskies managed just four hits in the contest off three UMKC pitchers.

Sheridon Wilbur started and took the loss for Kansas City, going two innings and allowing one hit, one walk and one run. Bailey Brumley went two innings on one-hit relief, followed by Camryn Stickel who also went two innings and allowed the sixth-inning tally.

The win pushes HCU over .500 to 7-6 overall. The Huskies went 2-1 in the Classic, and are now 3-1 on the five-game homestand that concludes on Tuesday afternoon against cross-town foe Texas Southern University. First pitch at Husky Field is scheduled for 4 pm.
