SB: Huskies tame Tigers to complete 4-1 homestand

Janes, Grofman combine to limit TSU to six hits and one earned run

HOUSTON --- Jasie Roberts crushed a two-run homer to highlight at three-run first frame and Houston Christian University went on to a 6-3 victory over cross-town foe Texas Southern on Tuesday at Husky Field. It was the fifth straight victory over the Tigers in the series and completed a 4-1 homestand for the Huskies.

Haylie Savage got things started in the bottom of the first with a sharp, one-out single up the middle. Roberts then deposited a no-doubter to left center, giving HCU a 2-0 lead. Kaicey Hagler would follow with a single through the left side and would then come all the way around on a double down the left field line by Breana Herrera, staking the Huskies to a three-run advantage one frame in.

Texas Southern got to HCU starter Katy Janes for a single run in the second, as Jordan McClain came in on a bases loaded pass. The sacks would be left full and Janes would strand two more in the third without a run. TSU would scratch another run across in the fourth, taking advantage of two HCU errors in the inning to cut the lead to 3-2.

HCU got one of the runs back in their half of the fourth. Herrera walked and was pinch-run for by Jackie Jessup. Jessup would move all the way to third on a throwing error after a sacrifice bunt that allowed Maggie Childs to reach. With runners on the corners, Riley Martin pulled a ball to second base for an RBI groundout to double the margin to two.

In the fifth the Huskies brought on Ronni Grofman in relief of Janes. A one-out double by Madison Griggs amounted to nothing as she was erased when Hagler snared Lanay Carr's liner and flipped to Childs to double-off Griggs at second.

Two more runs would cross the dish in the fifth for HCU, both coming with two away. Savage walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Roberts. One out later and with Savage on third, Herrera was hit by a pitch to bring up Childs, who singled through the left side to score Savage. After Maddy Bailey drew a free pass to juice the bases, Heidi Maytum followed with one as well to bring home Herrera and push the Huskies ahead 6-2.

Grofman would work out of a jam in the seventh, stranding two runners while striking out three. She would fan two more in the seventh to finish things off, and end HCU's first homestand of the year with four wins in five outings.

Janes powered through four innings to pick up her third victory of the season. She allowed just two hits and one earned run while walking six and striking out three. Grofman picked up her first career save with three innings of work, scattering four hits and mowing down five.

HCU made good use of seven hits for their six runs. Childs went 2-2 with an RBI, Savage and Roberts both went 1-3 and Herrera was 1-1 with an RBI. Savage scored twice while Roberts cranked her second dinger of the of the season two go with two driven in.

Madison Griggs went 2-3 with a run scored to lead the Tigers, now 5-3 on the season. Maren Berger suffered her first defeat of the season, going four innings and allowing six hits and four runs.

Now 8-6 on the season, HCU will take to the road this weekend for a three-game series with former Southland foe Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches. Two games on Friday will be followed by the series finale on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies return home next Tuesday to begin a six-game homestand which includes the opening series of conference play against Lamar.
