SB: HCU splits a pair of games in the Husky Classic

Huskies face Kansas City in finale on Sunday

HOUSTON --- Houston Christian University earned a split of a pair of games in the second day of the Husky Classic on Saturday afternoon. HCU shut down Prairie View A&M 6-0 in the afternoon opener before falling to Kansas City 13-3 under the lights in its second contest of the day.

Now sitting at an even 6-6 on the season, the Huskies will again face off with Kansas City in a single-game final day of the Classic. Following the Sunday matinee, the homestand will conclude with a Tuesday afternoon tilt against cross-town foe Texas Southern University at 4 pm.

GAME ONE vs. PRAIRIE VIEW

HCU pushed across a single run in the second stanza, the only tally they ended up needing in the game. Breana Herrera got a two-out single up the middle to score Ronni Grofman, who had doubled to left to lead off the inning.

Three more would cross the pay station in the third. Haylie Savage doubled with one out, followed by consecutive plunks of Jasie Roberts and Grofman to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Savage and advanced the other two up a base as well, allowing Maddy Bailey's sharp single to left to plate two and give the Huskies a 4-0 cushion.

The hosts would tack on a couple more in the fifth. Roberts walked and Grofman was safe on a fielders choice. One out later it was Herrera again, plastering a double to left center to push HCU's lead to 6-0.

Herrera led the Huskies, going 2-3 with three RBI, while Bailey was 1-3 with two RBI, backing a solid outing from Lyndie Swanson. The senior from Katy went 6.1 innings, scattering eight hits and fanning seven with no free passes to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Jaylyn Davis and Tamera McKnight each had two hits for PV, now 4-11 overall. Cailin Massey suffered the defeat, falling to 1-4 on the year, going five innings and giving up all six runs.

GAME TWO vs. KANSAS CITY:

The Huskies jumped on the board quickly, as a mammoth homer from Haylie Savage off the top of the scoreboard in right field gave HCU an early 2-0 lead in the first frame.

From there, it was all Kansas City, as the visiting Roos put a huge number up in the third to put the game out of reach. UMKC batted around in the inning, with the big blows coming on two-run doubles by Espy Daniels and Kadin Vire, as the visitors took a commanding 10-2 lead.

HCU would get a run back in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk by Savage, but a three run homer by Katie Noble in the fifth finished things off for Kansas City.

Savage had her second homer of the season and drove in all three runs for the Huskies, who mustered just five hits. Ronni Grofman took the loss, going just 2.1 innings allowing five hits and seven runs to fall to 2-2 on the season.

Daniels led the 10-hit attack, going 3-3 with two runs and two RBI for the Roos. Lexy Smith and Briona Woods each had two hits and two RBI to make a winner of Camryn Stickel, now 2-4 on the season.
