SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Huskies opened the Sugar Land Classic at Constellation Field falling to Creighton 22-1 in seven innings.
Damian Ruiz scored the lone run for the Huskies with a solo shot in the bottom of the second.
After allowing seven runs on four hits in the top of the second inning,
Damian Ruiz hits a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning to narrow the gap to six runs at 7-1. The Bluejays answered scoring 11 runs in the top of the third inning and cruised to a 22-1 win run ruling the Huskies after seven innings.
The Huskies (3-3) were led by
Damian Ruiz going 2-for-2 with a home run while
Luke Bard went 1-for-3.
Graham Laxton went 1-for-1 while
William Jewell went 1-for-3.
James Kirkpatrick (0-1) was tagged with the loss pitching 1.2 innings to start the game allowing seven earned runs on three hits with five walks and a strikeout.
Dave Wilson,
Jonathan Valdez, and
Brock Shoffner combined for 3.2 shutout innings of relief. Valdez recorded two strikeouts in two innings of relief while Schoffner added one strikeout in one inning of relief. The Huskies used seven pitchers in game one of the Sugar Land Classic.
Creighton (3-0) was led by Ben North going 3-for-4 with two grand slams, 10 RBIs, four runs and a triple. Nolan Clifford went 3-for-4 with a home run, four runs, three RBIs and a walk. Dominic Cancellieri (2-0) earned the win pitching five innings to start the game allowing one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Tommy Lamb pitched two shutout innings of relief with three strikeouts.
The Huskies will continue the Sugar Land Classic on Saturday matching up against the University of Illinois-Chicago at 3 p.m.
