HOUSTON – HCU fell behind early and never recovered, dropping a Southland Conference matchup, 68-42, to visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Sharp Gym on Thursday evening.
The Islanders (18-7, 11-3 SLC) got on the board first, taking a 3-0 lead on a Mireia Aguedo free throw, but
Enya Maguire knocked down a three at the 7:41 mark to bring the Huskies (6-19, 1-3 SLC) even. TAMUCC scored the next five points and by the end of the first quarter had an 18-7 lead.
Consecutive baskets from
Erin Maguire opened scoring in the second quarter, cutting the HCU deficit to eight, 20-12. A few minutes later,
Jo Oly connected on a triple to again pull the Huskies within single-digits, 27-18, but the Islanders closed the first half with a 33-20 advantage. A&M-Corpus Christi then started the second half with a 9-0 run and led by at least 20 the rest of the game.
N'Denasija Collins led the Huskies with 14 points and nine rebounds, just missing out on a double-double. The senior was 6-of-12 from the floor and had three steals.
Tove Caesar and
Erin Maguire each scored nine for HCU with Caesar connecting on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and Maguire adding five rebounds.
The Islanders were led by senior Alecia Westbrook who scored 16 points in just 20 minutes on the floor, shooting 6-of-10 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds. Nabaweeyah McGill added 12 points for TAMUCC.
The Huskies finished the night shooting 30.4 percent (17-of-56) overall and 25 percent (6-of-24) from three. HCU was hurt by 27 turnovers while the visitors committed just 12 miscues. TAMUCC held a slim 41-39 advantage on the boards.
The Huskies are back in action this Saturday, Feb. 24, for a Southland matchup vs. the Northwestern State Lady Demons at 1:00 p.m. in Sharp Gym.
