SB: HCU darts past North Dakota in home opener

Two-run double by Childs in sixth makes a winner of Janes in pitcher's duel

HOUSTON --- Maggie Childs two-run double in the bottom of the sixth pushed Houston Christian University past University of North Dakota on Wednesday as the Huskies captured a 3-2 victory in their home opener. The rally made a winner of Katy Janes, who outdueled UND's Camryn LaSota in a game that saw just eight total hits.

UND got on the board quickly, scratching across a single run in the first. Katie Joten walked to lead off and then stole second base before scoring on a sharp RBI single to center by Mari Peters.

Goose-eggs were traded until the fifth, when HCU knotted things up. Maddy Bailey walked to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Kaicey Hagler. Then with one out and a full count, Juls Garcia smacked an RBI triple to the wall in right-center, scoring Bailey for a 1-1 score.

That tie wouldn't last long, as North Dakota pushed a run home again in the sixth, almost exactly as they did in the first. Joten this time led off by being hit by a pitch and stole second before moving to third on a sacrifice by Izzy Haslett. She would then come across on a single to center by Peters to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage.

HCU came right back however in the bottom of the frame. With one away, Jasie Roberts lined a clean single to center. Breana Herrera then cranked a double to left field to put runners on second and third. UND went to the pen, bringing in left-hander Makeala Carr to face Maggie Childs. After fouling off several pitches to stay alive, Childs then blasted a ball down the left field line to bring in both runners and hand the Huskies a 3-2 lead.

Janes would allow a two-out single to Taya Hopfauf in the top of the seventh, but got Brooklyn Morris to ground out to Childs at short to finish off her sterling complete game performance. She allowed just three hits on the afternoon and two runs while walking a pair and fanning two to run her record to 2-1 on the year.

Five different Huskies had hits, with the RBI's coming from the Sante Fe duo of Juls Garcia and Childs.

Peters had both hits and both runs driven in for the visitors from Grand Forks, now 3-10 overall. LaSota suffered the hard-luck loss, going 5.1 innings and allowing just four hits while getting four punchouts to fall to 1-5 on the season.

HCU evens its overall record once again, now standing at 5-5. The Husky Classic is on tap for the weekend as the five-game homestand continues. The Huskies will not play on Friday, but play twice on Saturday against Kansas City and Prairie View and again on Sunday against Kansas City.
