SB: Huskies toppled by No. 2 Texas

HCU faces North Dakota on Thursday in home opener to kick off five-game homestand

AUSTIN --- Houston Christian University was toppled in a mid-week contest by No. 2 ranked University of Texas on Wednesday, falling 14-1 at Red and Charlene McCombs Field in Austin.

HCU will play it's home opener on Thursday at Husky Field against North Dakota (more below).

The Huskies trailed just 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third, but the Longhorns flexed their muscle and hung a big crooked number on the board to take a 11-0 lead. The first five Texas batters reached base with the big blow a home run to left center from Reese Atwood, her fifth of the season, as the Horns batted around in the inning.

HCU got on the board in the fourth. Jasie Roberts walked with one out, and Jackie Jessup's hard hit ball to short was mishandled, putting two on for Maddy Bailey. The junior would then deposit a ball into the right-center gap, plating Roberts with an RBI double.

The Huskies managed just two hits on the day, a third-inning single by Kaicey Hagler and the double by Bailey. Ronni Grofman started and took the defeat, her first of the season, going two innings and allowing three runs.

Atwood, Joley Mitchell and Katie Stewart each had three hits, including a homer, for the Longhorns to back Estelle Czech. She went three innings for her second victory of the season as Texas improves to 8-0 overall.

HCU falls to 4-5 on the season. The Huskies return to the diamond on Thursday afternoon to face the University of North Dakota in the season's home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm at Husky Field, kicking off a five-game homestand which includes hosting the Husky Classic from Friday-Sunday.
