HAMMOND, La. – HCU women's basketball, following a bye date this past Thursday, crosses state lines to take on Southeastern inside the Pride Roofing University Center at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The last time the Huskies (6-17, 1-11 SLC) and Lady Lions (15-9, 11-2 SLC) played was Jan. 25 in Houston. HCU trailed by 10 with just eight minutes to play before fighting back to tie the game on a tough driving layup by
Kennedy Wilson with just five seconds to go. SLU missed a shot just before the buzzer and then drew a foul on an attempted tip-in with 0.7 seconds to go, earning a pair of free throws that proved the difference in the 53-51 Southeastern win.
Senior
N'Denasija Collins led all players with 16 points in the game while also pulling down 12 rebounds.
Enya Maguire added 15 points and Wilson finished with 10. SLU's Hailey Giaratano and Cheyanne Daniels each scored 14.
Collins continues to rank near the top of the league in scoring (14.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.8 rpg) in conference play, currently standing fourth in points and second on the boards. Additionally, the senior is third in the league from three against SLC opponents, knocking down 43.3 percent (13-of-30) from behind the arc.
The Lady Lions fell out of first place in the conference standings on Thursday, dropping a 67-60 decision at home to Lamar. Giaratano poured in 17 for Southeastern in the loss and leads the Lady Lions with 12.8 ppg this season. As a team, in SLC play, SLU is out-scoring opponents by 6.2 ppg.
Following Saturday's game, HCU returns to Sharp Gym for its next two matchups. The Huskies will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 6:00 p.m. before taking on Northwestern State on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1:00 p.m.
