HOUSTON – This Sunday the HCU women's basketball team will host the Northwestern State Lady Demons in Sharp Gym at 2:00 p.m. as Southland Conference play ramps up ahead of the new year.
The Huskies (4-6, 1-0 SLC) opened SLC play with a 62-56 victory over East Texas A&M on Dec. 14 while the Lady Demons (3-7, 0-1 SLC) dropped a 48-46 road matchup against UIW on Dec. 6 in their first conference game.
HCU enjoyed its best offensive game of the season in its last game, falling at home to Sam Houston while shooting 50 percent (29-of-58) from the floor. Senior
Kierra Prim had her best game of the season, connecting on 10-of-15 from the field for 21 points.
Erin Maguire added 17 points with
Tiffany Tullis putting up 10 points with nine rebounds, just missing out on another double-double.
Northwestern State has lost its last three games, most recently falling at South Florida by a 71-36 final score. Freshman forward Vernell Atamah scored a team-high 10 points in the loss. Senior Mya Blake leads the team with 14.1 points per game this season while Atamah is scoring 12.9 ppg. Senior Jasmin Dixon is tops on the team with 5.8 rebounds per game.
HCU won five of six meetings between the two programs from 2020-2023 but the Lady Demons won both matchups last season. When the two teams met in Houston last year, the Huskies were within three with just under two minutes to play but NSU left with a 64-55 win.
HCU will hit the road for a pair of SLC games on Thursday, Jan. 2, to face Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas before moving on to Beaumont, Texas to take on Lamar on Saturday, Jan. 4.
