Game Notes

HOUSTON – Non-conference play comes to a close this Friday afternoon for HCU women's basketball when the Huskies take to the court against the Sam Houston Bearkats at 1:00 p.m. inside Sharp Gym.

The Huskies (4-5) and Bearkats (6-3) have faced off 21 times historically with the majority of those meetings coming as Southland Conference opponents. HCU owns a 9-12 all-time record against Sam Houston with the Bearkats winning the last six contests, including a 67-65 final last year in Huntsville.

HCU moved to 4-1 on its home floor this past Tuesday, defeating St. Thomas by a 46-44 final. After falling into a 27-16 hole in the first half with their starters on the bench, the Huskies came back in the second half for the win behind a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double by freshman Mariyah Brown and 13 second half points from Anna Maguire.

Maguire leads the Huskies this season with 9.5 points per game, scoring 30 over the last two games. The Huskies own a +3.8 rebounding margin this season, out-rebounding their opponents in all but two games so far.

The Bearkats have won four of their last five games, including a 72-61 road win at Southern Utah this past Monday. Four players led a balanced offensive attack, scoring between 13 and 17 points each. Junior guard Kaila Kelly leads the team with 13.4 ppg while junior Deborah Ogayemi is adding 11.1 ppg and leads the way with 8.3 rebounds per game. As a team, Sam Houston ranks third nationally in turnovers forced per game, creating 27.33 per game.

The Huskies get a break for Christmas and then return to fully jump into Southland Conference play, hosting Northwestern State on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2:00 p.m.
