VB: HCU Triumphs Over Northwestern State in Final Home Match of the Season

Huskies celebrate Senior Night with a thrilling five-set victory in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas – In a dramatic five-set showdown, HCU volleyball capped off its last home match of the season with a 25-16, 25-20, 17-25, 19-25, 19-17 win over Northwestern State. The Huskies honored seniors Emerald Jacobs, Tatiana Evans, Audrey Pearce, Alexia Jones, and Grace McLaughlin, each contributing critical plays to secure the victory. Jacobs, who joined HCU this season, leads the team with 3.51 kills per set and added 16 kills in the match. Evans, who crossed the 1,000-dig mark earlier in the week, tallied 16 digs and an ace. Pearce, a three-time All-Conference selection, reached her 1,000th career kill recently and added 14 more tonight along with six blocks. Jones, second on the team in aces, recorded key digs to support the defense. McLaughlin, with over 3,000 career assists, orchestrated the offense with 31 assists and added 13 digs, helping the Huskies hold their ground through a nail-biting finish.

HCU took charge early in the first set, building a quick lead and maintaining their momentum through consistent scoring and solid defensive plays. Northwestern State had moments of strong rallies, but HCU's offense, led by Emerald Jacobs and Audrey Pearce, pushed the team to a 25-16 win in the set.

In the second set, Northwestern State stepped up their pressure, narrowing the gap on HCU's lead. Despite multiple blocks from Northwestern's Olivia Bush and key defensive digs, HCU held onto their advantage. Grace McLaughlin's precise assists and powerful kills from Ravyn Dash and Jacobs kept the Huskies ahead, winning the set 25-20.

The momentum shifted in the third set as Northwestern State's offense, fueled by Teresa Garza and Reaghan Thompson, intensified. HCU found it difficult to counter, and Northwestern took the set 25-17, cutting into HCU's overall lead.

The fourth set saw Northwestern State building on their success, capitalizing on HCU's errors and enhancing their defense. While Jacobs and Pearce provided notable plays for the Huskies, Northwestern State secured the set 25-19, pushing the match into a decisive fifth set.

In the final set, both teams exchanged points in a closely contested showdown. The Huskies, however, emerged victorious with crucial kills and blocks in the closing moments, capturing the set 19-17 and the match with a resilient team effort.

Up Next, the Huskies hit the road to close out their season, facing Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on November 14 and UT Rio Grande Valley on November 16.
