VB: The Huskies Fall to A&M-Corpus Christi

The volleyball team faces a 3-0 loss on the road



CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Houston Christian's volleyball team fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 3-0 sweep on November 14 (Thursday) at 6:30 p.m. in Southland Conference action.

A&M-Corpus Christi claimed the first set 25-18 with a commanding performance. The Islanders surged early, establishing a lead through efficient attacks from Rylee Achtzehn and Kyndal Payne, who combined for pivotal kills. Despite strong contributions from HCU's Audrey Pearce, who led with 8 kills and 4 blocks, and Emerald Jacobs, who added 7 kills and 11 digs, the Huskies struggled to keep pace. TAMUCC's defense, anchored by Payne's 14 digs and Achtzehn's 4 blocks, stifled HCU's momentum. Key service errors from both teams shaped the set, but TAMUCC's consistent execution ultimately sealed the win.

In the second set, A&M-Corpus Christi triumphed 25-22 over Houston Christian in a tightly contested battle. Both teams exchanged leads throughout, with HCU's Audrey Pearce and Emerald Jacobs contributing key kills. Pearce also led with 4 blocks, while Grace McLaughlin set up the offense with 14 assists and added an ace. Jacobs tallied 11 digs for the Huskies. For A&M-Corpus Christi, Kyndal Payne was dominant with 12 kills and 14 digs, supported by Rylee Achtzehn's 4 blocks and 9 kills. The Islanders capitalized on key errors from HCU, including service and attack mistakes, allowing them to edge out the set.

In the third set, A&M-Corpus Christi secured a 25-22 victory in a back-and-forth battle. The set saw strong performances from HCU's Audrey Pearce (8 kills), Emerald Jacobs (7 kills), and Ana Garza (7 kills), while McLaughlin contributed another 14 assists. However, the Islanders' Kyndal Payne led the charge with 12 kills and 14 digs, and Leah Stolfus added 10 kills. Key defensive plays from Rylee Achtzehn, who posted 4 blocks, helped TAMUCC seal the set and the match.

The Huskies were led by Audrey Pearce, who contributed 8 kills and 4 blocks, while Emerald Jacobs added 7 kills and 11 digs, showcasing her all-around performance. Ana Garza also contributed 7 kills, helping the offense stay competitive. Grace McLaughlin set up the offense with 14 assists, while Peyton Fadal chipped in 10 assists. Defensively, Pearce, Allana Archie, and Sa'Myah Medford combined for 11 total blocks, with Pearce leading the way. Jacobs and Tatiana Evans were strong in the back row, each recording double-digit digs, while Alexia Jones added 8 digs to solidify the team's defensive effort.

Next up, the Huskies will face their final match before the conference tournament on November 16 (Saturday) at 2 p.m. against UT Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas.
