GEN: HCU mourns the passing of Dr. John Yarrington

Former Dean of Music and Faculty Athletic Representative passed Monday at the age of 83

HCU is saddened to share the news of the passing of Dr. John Yarrington, who died on Monday after a brief illness. He was 83.

"Dr. Y" as he was affectionately known by so many, came to HCU in 1999 to serve as the Dean of the School of Music and Director of Schola Cantorum and University Singers. He also served the HCU Athletic Department as Faculty Athletic Representative, and was an ardent supporter of HCU student-athletes, coaches and staff, most notably the HCU men's basketball team.

Dr. Yarrington was the director of the Chancel Choir of First Presbyterian Church in Houston for 21 years and also taught private voice lessons while most recently teaching conducting as an adjunct Professor of Music at The University of St. Thomas, Houston.

"We are all heartbroken at the news of Dr. Yarrington's passing," said Director of Athletics Steve Moniaci. "Dr. Y was a loyal friend and servant of our university and athletic department family. His love and passion for this university and its students was unparalleled. He truly cared for each and every single student he came in contact with, which is evident by the outpouring of heartfelt notes and stories since the news broke. We are all better for having known John and he will be sorely missed. Our prayers go out to his wife Diane and his six children, 14 grandchildren, family and friends."

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10 am on Saturday, November 16 at First Presbyterian Church of Houston, 5300 Main Street. Donations may be made to the Chancel Choir of FPC or the charity of your choice.
