WBB: Huskies Drop Matchup at UIW

N’Denasija Collins led all players with 15 points



SAN ANTONIO, Texas – HCU women's basketball fell to the UIW Cardinals in Southland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at McDermott Center by a 77-49 final.
 
Scoring was back-and-forth for the first three and a half minutes with a Yasmin Butler layup putting HCU (5-14, 0-8 SLC) ahead, 7-6, at the 6:34 mark. The Cardinals (11-7, 4-3 SLC) scored the next five points to take an 11-7 lead, however. The Huskies got back to within one multiple times as the first quarter wore on but UIW held an 18-15 advantage through 10 minutes.
 
A pair of free throws from the hands of Kennedy Wilson and another from N'Denasija Collins tied the game at 18-18 but UIW responded with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes. Hannah Field and Collins connected on consecutive buckets to trim it to a four-point game with four minutes left in the half but the Cardinals took a 28-23 lead into halftime.
 
The Cardinals pulled away in the third quarter, out-scoring the Huskies 26-9 for a 55-32 lead with just 10 minutes left to play. UIW scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter but the closest HCU go the rest of the way was 27.
 
Collins led all players with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting and pulled down five rebounds. Wilson added 11 points while Erin Maguire scored eight off the bench.
 
HCU shot 38.3 percent (18-of-47) from the floor while the Cardinals shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) overall and knocked down 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from three-point range.
 
The Huskies travel to Louisiana for their next two games, first taking on the New Orleans Privateers in the Crescent City on Thursday, Feb. 1, before heading on to Thibodaux to face Nicholls on Saturday, Feb. 3.
