Game Notes

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – HCU begins a stretch of three-straight Southland Conference road games this Saturday afternoon on the UIW campus at the McDermott Center with a 2:00 p.m. matchup with the Cardinals.

The Huskies (5-13, 0-7 SLC) erased a 10-point fourth quarter deficit on Thursday night against league-leading Southeastern, evening the score with 2:30 to go and again with just five seconds remaining. A foul on a contested tip-in attempt at the buzzer sent SLU to the line for a pair of free throws that were the difference in a heartbreaking 53-51 loss.

Junior Enya Maguire knocked down five threes in the loss, matching her career-high for made threes in a game, and dished out a season-best four assists. The Belfast, Ireland native now has 116 made threes for her career, just two away from entering the program's top-10 for career made three-pointers.

The Huskies got another three blocked shots from sophomore Yasmin Butler, giving her 15 blocks over the last four games. She leads the league in total blocked shots and blocks per game in SLC play in just five games played.

UIW (10-7, 3-3 SLC) has won three of its last four and had a bye this past Thursday. The Cardinals defeated McNeese at home last Saturday, 67-55, with twin double-double efforts from senior guards Nina de Leon Negron and Destiny Terrell.

Sophomore Aliyah Collins leads UIW in scoring for the season, averaging 12.4 points per game with 14.7 ppg in conference play to rank fifth. De Leon Negron is averaging 10.2 ppg and six rebounds per game while Terrell leads the team with 7.3 rpg. In SLC games, UIW is third in the conference with a +5.7 rebounding margin with Terrell and de Leon Negron ranking fifth and sixth, respectively, in rebounding within the league.

HCU is 17-4 all-time vs. the Cardinals but UIW has won two of the last three. Last season, the two teams split the season series with the home team winning both meetings.

HCU heads to Louisiana next week, first taking on New Orleans on Thursday, Feb. 1, before continuing on to Thibodaux, La. for a Saturday, Feb. 3, matchup with Nicholls.
