CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The 2023-24 iteration of the Southland Conference women's basketball schedule begins this Wednesday for the HCU Huskies with a visit to the American Bank Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
The Huskies (5-6) have gone 4-2 over their last six games with a road win over Wichita State among those victories. Most recently, HCU defeated Schreiner in Sharp Gym by a 66-40 margin on Dec. 18. By the time the Huskies and Islanders (7-4) tip on Wednesday, HCU will have gone more than two weeks between games.
 
HCU's N'Denasija Collins is tied for the Southland Conference lead in scoring heading into league play, averaging 13.8 points per game. Collins is also sixth in the SLC in rebounding with 5.9 rebounds per game while teammate Amy Cotton ranks eighth with 5.3 rpg. Collins led the Huskies with 21 points in their win over Schreiner while Cotton ended the day with 12 points, eight rebounds, a career-best six blocked shots and four assists.
 
The Islanders boast the conference's top rebounder in Alecia Westbrook, averaging 7.5 rpg. Westbrook, a senior forward, also leads TAMUCC with 10.1 ppg while five other players are all averaging at least six ppg. The Islanders lead the conference in scoring margin, out-scoring opponents by an average of 11.2 ppg thanks to a defense that is holding opponents to 55.1 ppg.
 
The opening matchup of the conference schedule features a pair of teams picked in the top half of the league's preseason poll with the Islanders picked to finish second the Huskies picked fifth. The two teams have split their meetings each of the last three seasons.
 
HCU will be back home in Sharp Gym on Saturday, Jan. 6, to host the Nicholls Colonels at 1:00 p.m.
