MSOC: Late heroics on both ends propel Huskies to stalemate with UAB

Zeeman's late equalizer and two last minute saves by Aitken seal 1-1 draw

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —- HCU got late heroics from Sam Zeeman and Alex Aitken to pull even and stay there, earning a 1-1 draw with host UAB at the Soccer for the Cure Classic on Sunday afternoon at Goldfarb Field.

Zeeman got downfield on a breakaway and Kevin Yamna fed him with a beautiful through ball from just inside midfield. Zeeman would then win a 1v1 to put home the equalizer at the 88:12 mark, knotting the game at one and giving him his first goal of the season and second of his career.

Aitken would then turn away two shots in the final 1:07, the first from Teodor Thorvaldsen, then with just 26 seconds remaining, a blast from Ohad Buck, preserving the road stalemate.

"We played really well on Friday and felt like we deserved more than we got," said Head Coach Ryan Pratt. "Today, it was a little bit the opposite, as we didn't play as well, but fought through some adversity and did just enough to earn a result. With the quick turnaround from Friday to Sunday, which we don't normally have during the schedule, we found out a little more about who we are and where we need to be both physically and mentally. Overall, a solid weekend with lots to build upon, and lots to continue to work on."

The Huskies were outshot on the afternoon 17-8, including 8-4 on goal, but got the one when they needed it most. HCU grabbed 12 corners to just three for the Blazers.

Kharrel Medza and Ryan Okerayi had two shots apiece, while Aitken made seven saves against eight shots on goal.

The Huskies are now 1-2-1 on the season and will return to the confines of Sorrels Field this week for a pair of matches. HCU will host Oral Roberts on Thursday, then follow that up with a Sunday tilt versus Santa Clara. Both are scheduled for 7 pm opening kicks.
