MSOC: Huskies settle for 1-1 draw with ORU

Aitken makes nine stops but Golden Eagles get 84th minute goal to knot game

HOUSTON —- HCU fell victim to a late equalizer, settling for a 1-1 draw with Oral Roberts at Sorrels Field on Thursday night.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half, with Alex Aitken making six saves as the Golden Eagles outshot the Huskies 10-5, 6-1 on goal.

That pace continued early into the second half, but in the 54th minute, Nana Kofi Obeng was sent off with his second yellow, putting the Huskies down a man for the remainder of the match.

On the defensive from that point, the Huskies would mount a offensive rush in the 67th minute. The push led to Ryan Okerayi being taken down in the box, drawing a penalty kick for the Huskies.

Okerayi would smash his penalty off the hands of ORU goalkeeper Jakub Grzesiak, and the ball trickled right back to the freshman, who calmly slid in the rebound for a 1-0 HCU lead.

ORU would continue to hammer away at the HCU defense, which battened down the hatches well until the 84th minute.

It was then that the Golden Eagles finally broke through. A cross from Reed Berry on the right side found Luis Flores in the front of the box. He would fight his way through a host of defenders and wriggle a shot just past the outstretched arms of Aitken to knot the score.

Okerayi had the penalty kick score, his third goal of the year. Victor Velasco took three shots, and Alex Aitken, the NCAA leader in saves, made nine stops.

Flores scored his fifth goal of the season amongst his six shots, four on goal, to pace ORU, which outshot the Huskies 22-10, 10-3 on goal. Oral Roberts, now 3-1-1 on the season, was ranked No. 25 in the NCAA last week before slipping out of the poll on Tuesday afternoon following a Monday loss at No.11 ranked SMU.

The Huskies are now 1-2-2 on the season after their second straight draw. HCU will get back to action on Sunday, hosting Santa Clara at 7 pm. The Broncos will hit Sorrels on the heels of their first victory of the campaign, as they tripped up UIW 2-1 with two second half goals in San Antonio on Thursday evening.
