WSOC: 80th-Minute Goal Downs Huskies, 1-0

HCU out-shot the visitors, 24-8

HOUSTON – HCU out-shot visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 24-8, but it was the Islanders who escaped Sorrels Field with a 1-0 Southland Conference victory on Friday night.

Sophomore Emily Jaimes had an opportunity in the 12th minute with a long header that was on target wile Megan Guy responded for the Islanders (4-4-3, 1-1-1 SLC) five minutes later but Taylor Sanderson smothered it for the save. The Huskies (3-6-0, 1-1-0 SLC) continued to get looks as the half wore on but were unable to put them on the mark. AMCC's Aaliyah Ramadan blasted a shot on goal from about 15 yards out but Sanderson was there to make a big save. Katie Marker also had a shot on goal for HCU in the first half and Mia Salas let fly from long range with around 20 seconds left but the shot was just high, bouncing off the crossbar.

Adi Radwanski headed a corner kick off the foot of Alexia Murrilo from point-blank range in the 55th minute but luck was on the Islanders' side as it was directly at goalkeeper Zoe Theriot. Alexa Huerta and Murillo each had shot on target later in the half, with Murillo's attempt to the top shelf just getting deflected over the crossbar in the 73rd minute. The Islanders found the net off a corner kick in the 80th minute when a header by Taylor Thibodeau was stopped by Radwanski but as the ball bounced around in front of the goal off the rebounds it ended up back at the feet of Thibodeau, who fired over Sanderson's head from close range to make it a 1-0 game.

HCU held a sizable advantage in shot attempts but the two teams were even with six shots on goal each. Both teams earned six corner kicks over the course of the match, as well. In goal for HCU, Sanderson finished with four saves.

The Huskies will be back at it on Sunday, Oct. 1, afternoon when they host the McNeese Cowgirls at 1:00 p.m. at Sorrels Field.
