VB: HCU Continues Dominant Streak in Sharp Gym with sweep of UIW

Huskies extend home winning streak to 15



HOUSTON --- HCU extended its home winning streak to 15 straight matches on Saturday, dispatching of UIW in straight sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-13). 

The Huskies (7-7, 2-0 SLC) grabbed an early lead in the opening set with kills by Anna Gadway and Audrey Pearce to lead, 5-1 before the Cardinals brought it within three points at 7-4.

After three straight errors by UIW, the Huskies tied their largest lead of the set at 10-4 before the Cardinals got it to within four points at 17-14. The Huskies rallied off four of the next five points starting with back-to-back kills by Lexie Temple, cruising to a, 25-20 set one victory.


After losing the first two points in set two, the Huskies racked up four straight points capped off by a Pearce kill to take a, 6-2, lead. The Cardinals would recoup with three straight points to take the lead back at 5-4 before the Huskies tied the game with a Sara Arroyo kill at 10-10.

After a UIW kill, HCU went on a six-point run including kills by Cassidy Drapela and Pearce to claim a, 16-11, lead. The Huskies scored seven of the next eight points to take a commanding 22-15 lead, before the Cardinals put together five straight points to get within two, 22-20. HCU would close out the second set on a kill by Drapela to take a 25-22 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Cardinals tied the game at 6-6 before the Huskies tallied five of the next six points to take an 11-7 lead. After a kill by UIW, HCU captured six straight points including four kills by Temple. The Huskies closed out a dominant third set, 25-13, with a kill by Arroyo to close out the Cardinals in straight sets. HCU was led by outside hitter Arroyo with 12 kills while middle blocker Pearce recorded seven blocks and 10 kills. Setter Grace McLaughlin dished out 39 assists and libero Kaley Feris racked up 19 digs and three aces.

UIW's Allison Palmi led the Cardinals with nine kills while Risa Sena added seven kills and 13 digs. Setter Natalie Kimmel dished out 25 assists while Mariela Nieto led the Cardinals defensively with 15 digs.

The Huskies continue their rugged stretch to open conference play, return to action at Lamar on Tuesday in Beaumont.
