VB: Herman Nets Victory No. 200 at HCU with Straight-Set Win at Lamar

Huskies improve to 3-0 in SLC play

BEAUMONT, Texas – HCU continued its strong Southland start on Tuesday evening with a sweep of Lamar (25-13, 25-21, 25-22) at McDonald Gym, handing head coach Trent Herman his 200th win as the Huskies' head coach.

Herman's success tonight follows closely to his first win as head coach back of the Huskies in August of 2012, when HCU took down the Cardinals 3-1 at the North Texas Invitational.

The Huskies have now won three in a row to open league play during a daunting 10-day stretch that sees them play five times.
The Huskies (8-7, 3-0 SLC) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening set with kills by Anna Gadway and Cassidy Drapela. HCU kept the momentum going, claiming an 8-2 lead that reached as high as seven, 11-4, after three errors by the Cardinals (0-14, 0-3 SLC). Lamar pulled back to within four points at 14-10 before HCU racked up six-straight points to go up 20-10 before closing out the opening set, 25-13.

In the second set, Lamar scored the opening point before the Huskies tallied the next six, highlighted by a pair of Kaley Feris aces, to claim an early 6-1 lead. The Cardinals came alive, scoring nine of the next 10 points to gain a 10-7 advantage and force an HCU timeout. Trailing 13-10, the Huskies scored four-straight points starting with a kill by Grace McLaughlin followed by three consecutive attack errors to reclaim the lead at 14-13. Kills from Sara Arroyo and Gadway, along with a block by Drapela and Temple, helped push the Huskies back ahead, 18-14, before the Cardinals fought back to within one point at 20-19. HCU then closed out the set strong with five of the last seven points to claim the second set, 25-21.
Lamar raced out to a 9-2 lead in the third set, forcing an early Husky timeout. Four points later, down 12-3, HCU rallied with three-straight kills by Arroyo and one from Temple. Coming out of a Lamar timeout, the Huskies kept at it and scored 10 of the next 11 points to go ahead, 17-14. The Cardinals tied the game at 17-17 and eventually retook the lead, 21-19, on two straight errors by the Huskies but HCU closed out the match scoring six of the last seven points for the 25-22 win. The Huskies were led by Arroyo with 13 kills while Drapela added 10 kills and three blocks. Reigning Southland setter of the week, McLaughlin, dished out 31 assists while Feris led HCU defensively with 10 digs.

Lamar was led by Taisha Rhone with 10 kills while Lyric Jordan added seven kills. Jo Moffitt recorded 19 assists and Monique Gonzalez led the Cardinal's back line with eight digs.

The Huskies will return to action with back-to-back conference matchups in Sharp Gym. HCU will clash with rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, Sep. 28, at 6:30 p.m. before facing fellow conference leader Northwestern State on Saturday, Sep. 30, at 1 p.m.
