MSOC: HCU undone late by Belmont at Soccer for the Cure Classic

Huskies will look to rebound quickly when they face host UAB on Sunday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —- HCU fell victim to an 80th minute winner, falling to Belmont 2-1 at the UAB Soccer for the Cure Classic at Goldfarb Field on Friday evening.

The Huskies and Bruins played to a scoreless first frame, combining for just six shots total before the action heated up quickly in the second.

Zack Nicolaou put a shot on goal just two minutes into the second half. After trading shots off target, the Bruins cracked the ice on an Alex Clayton strike in the 53rd minute to give BU a 1-0 lead.

HCU wouldn't wait long to retaliate, earning a corner kick in the 55th minute that would lead to a Ricardo Garcia entry to Ryan Okerayi, who pushed home the equalizer for his second goal of the season.

The two teams would continue on the offensive, with each doubling their shot total from the first half. But it would be Belmont on this night, as at the 79:29 mark Esteban Leiva knocked home the game-winner.

Okerayi had a second straight game with a goal on his only shot on goal. Garcia finished with a team-high four shots and the assist to Okerayi, while Kharrel Medza had three total shots, two on goal.

Alex Aitken had four saves in the match. His first, on an Alex Johnson shot at the 11:07 mark, was the 100th of his career.

Belmont, now 2-0-1, outshot the Huskies 13-10, and had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.

HCU drops to 1-2-0 on the season in what was Head Coach Ryan Pratt's 100th game at the helm of the Huskies. They will face tournament host UAB on Sunday at 2 pm, as Pratt matches up against his alma mater for the first time as head coach of the Huskies.

LIVE STATS will be available for Sunday's game.
