HOUSTON – After being forced to cancel a pair of games last week and delay the team's home opener, the HCU women's soccer team welcomes Sam Houston and Texas State to Sorrels Field for a pair of games this week on Thursday and Sunday.
HCU (0-2) had to cancel matches last week on the road at SMU and at home vs. UT Rio Grande Valley last week due to illness within the program. The week prior, the Huskies (0-2) suffered a pair of defeats at the hands of Gonzaga and Utah Valley in the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff hosted by Hawaii. Sophomore
Alexa Huerta was the team's lone goal-scorer in the first two games, finding the net on Sunday vs. Utah Valley.
Sam Houston (1-2) opened the season with a 4-2 home victory over Prairie View A&M but has lost its last two, 3-2 to ULM and 1-0 to Lamar. Sophomore Kennedy Baquero leads the Bearkats with two goals scored with both coming in the win over PVAMU. Sam Houston is being out-shot, 40-28, so far this season and as a team is averaging 6.7 shots on goal per game. The Huskies and Bearkats have met 15 times with HCU holding a 4-6-5 all-time record. The series has been close since beginning in 2007 with just one game being decided by more than one goal.
Texas State (2-2) makes the trip to Sorrels Field after taking on Oklahoma State in San Marcos on Thursday. The Bobcats opened the season with home wins over McNeese and Central Arkansas before being shutout in their last two matches by North Texas and UTSA. Junior forward Zoe Junior has a pair of goals to her name while three different players have spent time in goal already. As a team, Texas State is averaging two goals per game.
Both games are set for 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sep. 3, at Sorrels Field.
