SB: Rains dampen Huskies upset hopes in 7-1 loss to SLU

HCU will play elimination game vs. Nicholls at 4 pm on Wednesday

LAKE CHARLES, La. — A lengthy rain-delay dampened HCU's hopes of a first-day upset as the Huskies fell 7-1 to second-seeded Southeastern on the opening day of play in the 2023 Southland Conference Tournament at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond. Knotted in a 1-1 pitcher's duel before the rains came, SLU exploded for a six-run sixth inning to claim victory and send the Huskies into an elimination game on Wednesday.

Kaicey Hagler got the Huskies off to a good start in the second, launching a mammoth homer over the scoreboard in left field to take a 1-0 lead.
SLU would get that run back in the bottom of the fifth, as Audrey Greely lined a shot off the scoreboard to tie the game at one apiece.

The Lions would then load the bases off HCU starter Ronni Grofman. Grofman, who went the first 4.1 innings allowing just two hits and fanning four, gave way to Lyndie Swanson, who promptly got Blaire Bizette to line into an inning-ending unassisted double play by Haylie Savage at third.
The rains would then come and delay the game for just over an hour and a half. Upon resumption of the ballgame in the sixth inning, the floodgates opened, as Southeastern would put together a string of hits, six in total, to push across six runs and break the game open.

Maria Detillier and Bailey Krolcyzk got things going with back-to-back doubles to start the frame and give the Lions a 2-1 lead. Greely and Madison Rayner added RBI singles, and Ka'lyn Watson had an RBI triple to put the second-seeded Lions up 6-1.

Swanson (9-10) suffered the loss in relief for the Huskies. After getting out of the fifth, she would not escape the sixth, giving up two runs on two hits before giving way to Katy Janes and Addy Prasifka.

Hagler went 1-3 with her fourth homer, while Autumn Sydlik and Jasie Roberts added the only other hits for HCU.

Cera Blanchard came on in relief the third inning for starter Ellie DuBois, and went the remaining 4.2 innings to earn her 17th win of the season. She allowed just one hit the rest of the way, walking two and fanning eight.

Audry Greely and Ka'lyn Watson each went 2-3 with two RBI to lead the Lions (45-12) offense.

NOTES AND WHAT'S UP NEXT:

The Huskies (20-32) will face third-seeded Nicholls in an elimination game at 4 pm on Wednesday. The Colonels (27-23) were upset by sixth-seeded Northwestern State 8-2 in eight innings in the tournament nightcap. Nicholls rallied from a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the seventh, then saw the Lady Demons explode for a six-run eighth to put the game away.

HCU faced Nicholls in its final road series of the year. The Colonels took the doubleheader on Friday, by 6-0 and 3-2 scores, and then nipped the Huskies in game three on Saturday 2-1. The final two games both went eight innings.
