SB: HCU clipped by Nicholls at Southland Tournament

Season comes to close with 2-1 elimination game loss

LAKE CHARLES, La. — HCU saw its season come to a close Thursday with a 2-1 loss to Nicholls in an elimination game at the Southland Conference Tournament on Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond.

Ronni Grofman came on in relief in the first inning for starter Lyndie Swanson and immediately hooked up with Audrey McNeil in yet another pitcher's duel for the Huskies.

Nicholls would jump on the board in the third inning. Abby Anderson singled through the left side to lead off the inning. After running the count full, Alexa Poche launched a two-out, two-run homer to left field, giving the Colonels a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth frame, the Huskies looked to put together a rally. Autumn Sydlik would lead off the inning by launching her sixth homer of the season to left center, pulling the Huskies to within 2-1.
Jasie Roberts followed with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Grofman. Roberts would then move to third on a wild pitch, but she'd be stranded there by McNeil, who got the next two batters to preserve the Nicholls lead.

That would end up being all the scoring on this day, as neither Grofman nor McNeil faced any real trouble the rest of the way.

Grofman went five innings and gave up five hits and the two runs, walking three and fanning three, as she fell to 5-6 in her first season with the Huskies.

AB Garcia went 2-3 and Sydlik went 1-3 with the homer and RBI. The home run by Sydlik was the 21st of her career, tying her with Demi Janak (2016-19) for seventh place on the all-time leaderboard.

McNeil improved to 13-8 on the year, going seven innings and scattering four hits and the one run while fanning six. Poche was 2-3 with the homer and two RBI for Nicholls.

Nicholls improves to 28-23 and moves on to play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Huskies finish the 2023 campaign at 20-33 overall, and lose just one senior, Avery Drake
