SB: Huskies subdued in Senior Day pitcher's duel with Cowgirls

HCU advances to SLC Tournament in Lake Charles, takes on Southeastern Tuesday afternoon

HOUSTON — HCU dropped its regular season Senior Day finale, falling in a pitcher's duel 1-0 to McNeese on Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.

Kaylee Lopez doubled just inside the right field line to start the second inning for the Cowgirls, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mariana Torres. After a walked to Rylie Bouvier, Lopez would come across with the game's lone run on a single up the middle by Erin Ardoin.

That would be all McNeese's Shaelyn Sanders (7-0) needed, as she went toe-to-toe with HCU starter Roni Grofman (5-5). Sanders allowed just four HCU hits and walked none, while Grofman was equally impressive, going the distance and scattering seven hits and the one run.

The Huskies put one late rally together in the sixth, as Avery Drake, playing her final game at Husky Field, singled to lead off the inning. She would move to second on a sacrifice bunt by AB Garcia and to third on a groundout by Haylie Savage, but was stranded there.

Drake, Garcia, Autumn Sydlik and Breana Herrera collected the Huskies four hits.

Ardoin went 2-2 for the Cowgirls (41-14 / 21-3), who will host the Southland Tournament next week in Lake Charles as the top seed.

WHAT'S UP NEXT:

The Huskies (20-31 / 9-15) season continues next week, as HCU will make its third straight appearance in the SLC Tournament.

Playing as the seventh seed, the Huskies will take on second-seed Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday afternoon with first pitch slated for 2:30 pm on Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond.

SLU took two of three from the Huskies in mid-April, winning 6-3 and 8-0 before the Huskies took a 4-3 victory in the series finale.
