HOUSTON – Ron Cottrell, HCU James Sears Bryant Head Men's Basketball Coach, announced the signing of Jay Alvarez to join the Huskies program on Tuesday afternoon.

Jay Alvarez (Waynesboro, PA - Waynesboro Area / SUNY-Sullivan), 6'5, 210, Guard-Forward

A 6'5, 210 lb. guard/forward hailing from Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Alvarez transfers to HCU from SUNY-Sullivan.

The versatile Alvarez finished his two seasons at Sullivan as a 1,000-point scorer, and was selected as a NJCAA Rising Star after his sophomore year.

He was a two-time 1st Team All-Conference selection while leading the Generals to back-to-back Region 15 Championships.

After averaging 15 points and 5.7 rebounds his first season with the Generals, he upped his numbers considerably as a sophomore, averaging 21.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He started 28 of the 30 games he played and averaged 29.6 minutes while shooting 53% from the floor. He also chipped in 1.8 assists and 1.9 steals.

Alvarez earned three conference player of the week honors and one national player of the week honor as a sophomore. His season culminated in being honored as the District Player of the Year and a 2023 NJCAA Division II 1st Team All-American. He was also later selected to the NJCAA Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game.

"Jay is a 1^st Team NJCAA All-America from SUNY Sullivan. This should sound familiar to our fans. Jay played at the same junior college and for the same coach, Brent Wilson, as Darius Lee. Jay's achievements and accolades are very similar to what Darius did there as well.

He is a multidimensional player who scores from all three levels. His size allows him to go inside offensively and defensively and be very effective. But, he is a natural an athletic wing with very good guard skills.

NOTE:

Alvarez is the latest to ink with the Huskies, joining Porter Bazil (April 17) and Dominic Capriotti (May 10) in the 2023-24 signing class.
