BATON ROUGE, La. - The HCU beach volleyball team earned an impressive 3-2 upset win over 10th-ranked Stanford on Saturday at the LSU Battle on the Bayou before falling to No. 5 LSU in the regular season finale.
The Huskies (15-16) picked up the first two points of the dual win over the Cardinal (21-10) with No. 5 pair
Gabi Axelrod and
Shelby O'Neal winning in two sets (21-14, 21-16). Then, at the fours,
Abbey Bufkin and
Abbey Reinard took the point in three sets (21-18, 9-21, 16-14).
Lindsay Harris and
Kristen Kleymeyer fell in three sets (21-13, 15-21, 15-11) at the twos while
Maddie Butters and
Alison Stanfill earned the winning point in a three-set thriller (21-16, 21-23, 15-10) as the No. 1 pair.
In the finale against the Tigers (24-10), HCU fell by a 4-1 final. The Huskies' point came from No 1 pair Butters and Stanfill in a three-set victory (12-21, 21-15, 15-13).
The win over Stanford is the Huskies' first over a ranked opponent since a 3-2 win over ninth-ranked Stetson in 2020.
The Huskies open the 2023 Southland Conference Championship on Friday, Apr. 21 against Nicholls at 10:00 a.m. in Corpus Christi, Texas.
