CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The HCU beach volleyball team split a pair of duals vs. Stephen F. Austin and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Conni & Jay Wise Islander Classic held at Water Edge Park.
In the opening matchup of the day, HCU (12-10) won a tightly-contested dual over SFA (2-14), 3-2, with the winning point coming down to the wire.
Mary Alper and
Paige Palmer picked up the team's first point at the No. 4 spot with a 21-17, 24-22 win before the Huskies got their second point from No. 2 pair
Kristen Kleymeyer and
Lindsay Harris in the form of a 21-15, 21-19 win. The deciding point came down to the ones with both teams reaching match point but it was HCU's
Maddie Butters and
Alison Stanfill who came away with the three-set, 14-21, 21-13, 19-17 victory.
The Huskies' afternoon match ended in a 3-2 defeat at the hands of TAMUK (9-11). The HCU points came from the No. 1 and No. 2 pairs. Butters and Stanfill won in two sets, 21-17, at the ones while Harris and Kleymeyer took a 24-22, 21-15 win at the twos. Harris and Kleymeyer have won four-in-a-row and nine of their last 10.
The Huskies close out the weekend on Saturday, Apr. 1, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 9:00 a.m.
