Houston Christian University returns to action with a mid-week game at Sam Houston State University on Tuesday night in Huntsville.
The Huskies are coming off a series win over rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to start conference play. HCU took a doubleheader on Thursday 1-0 and 4-3 before the Islanders salvaged the series finale with a 5-4 win on Friday.
Katy Janes was named the
Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday, her first career weekly accolade. Janes tossed a no-hitter in the series opener against TAMUCC, and finished with 8.1 scoreless, hitless innings for the week. She is now 5-5 on the season.
AB Garcia continues to spark the HCU offense. The sophomore outfielder is batting .417 on the season with 35 total hits in 27 games and a team-best 14 stolen bases.Â
Haylie Savage is batting .337 and leads the Huskies with three homers and 19 RBI.
Kaicey Hagler and
Jasie Roberts are right behind her, having driven in 14 and 13 runs respectively.
Sam Houston is currently 10-20 on the season. The Kats dropped two of three to Grand Canyon University in their first WAC series of the season.Â
SHSU is led at the plate by sophomore utility player Ellie Grill, who hits .333 with 14 runs and nine stolen bases. Sophomore utility player Brodie Quinlan leads the Bearkats with five homers and 15 RBI.
Senior right-hander Daryn Grams leads the Sam hurlers with a 4-3 mark and 2.64 ERA.
HCU and SHSU have met 45 times, with the most recent meeting coming earlier this season on February 26. The Bearkats defeated HCU 9-4 at the University of Houston Tournament.Â
After Tuesday night's contest, the Huskies will return home for just the second time this season when they host University of the Incarnate Word at Husky Field.
The Southland series begins with a 4 pm / 6 pm doubleheader on Thursday, followed by the series finale at noon on Friday.Â
