HUNTSVILLE, Texas - HCU fall to former Southland Conference opponent Sam Houston State in a midweek clash at Don Sanders Stadium, 6-4.
Redshirt junior third baseman
Reed Chumley went 2-for-4 with a homerun, an RBI, and a run for the Huskies (1-15). Freshman right fielder
Damian Ruiz singled and picked up an RBI, while senior shortstop
Austin Roccaforte singled and scored a run.
Junior lefthander
Tim Ewald (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit with two walks in .1 innings of relief. Freshman righthander
Baylor Baumann started for the Huskies pitching 4.2 innings of work allowing two earned runs on four hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Senior lefthander
Bryce Toney and senior righthander
Chad Ricker each pitched a shutout inning of relief allowing one walk on no hits.
HCU got things started early with two runs in the top of the first inning when
Austin Roccaforte scored on a fielder's choice hit by
Damian Ruiz, before
Diego Davila scored on a sac fly to center field off the bat of
Logan Letney. The Huskies added another run in the top of the third when
Samuel Benjamin scored on a fielding error by Sam Houston's Lane Brewster after
Damian Ruiz it a hard line-drive towards Brewster. HCU's final run came off a solo homerun by
Reed Chumley in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Joe Redfield went 2-for-3 with two doubles, four runs, two walks, and a stolen base for the Bearkats (10-8). Tyler Davis added another run for SHSU going 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Walker Janek went 1-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, a walk and a stolen base.
Chandler David (3-0) notched the win for the Bearkats, holding the Huskies scoreless in the final two innings of the game on two walks and a strikeout. Jack Driskell started the game for SHSU pitching two innings allowing two earned runs on no hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
The Bearkats posted one run in the bottom of the first when Justin Wishkoski singled through the left side scoring Joe Redfield. SHSU added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Walker Janek groundout to
Austin Roccaforte to score Redfield. The Bearkats tied the game at four a piece in the bottom of the seventh inning when Janek hit a double to right center scoring Redfield and Tyler Davis. The Bearkats took a two run lead,6-4, in the bottom of the eighth inning beginning with a couple of throwing errors by the Huskies scoring Myles Jefferson, and a double to right field by Davis to score Redfield.
HCU will return for their home opener at Husky Field with a three-game series against North Dakota State scheduled for Friday, March 17
th through Sunday, March 19
th.
