HOUSTON – Junior
Brycen Long broke the HCU single-season made three-pointers record on Wednesday evening and freshman
Pierce Bazil scored a career-high 23 points but the Huskies fell to Southeastern in the regular season finale at Sharp Gym, 80-64.
Long came into the game with 91 three-pointers on the season, tied with Bobby Sanders' mark set during the 1994-95 season. He started the game cold, going 0-of-7 from the floor in the first half and finally hit his first three of the night at the 11:58 mark in the second half. He finished the night with two triples, setting the new program record at 93.
Bazil led the Huskies (10-21, 7-11 SLC) with a career-best 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including a 4-of-5 showing from three.
Tristan Moore finished the night with 10 points and six rebounds and
Bonke Maring added nine points.
Southeastern (18-13, 12-6 SLC) opened up a 9-0 lead to start the game before Maring got HCU on the board. After a
Tristan Moore three made it a 14-5 game, SLU responded with the next 10 points and led by double-digits the rest of the game.
After trailing by 23 at halftime, the Huskies cut their deficit to 11, 59-48, with 10 minutes left to play. HCU just couldn't get any closer, pulling back to within 11 three more times as the half wore on.
The Huskies close the regular season tied for sixth place in the league standings at 7-11 in conference play, earning the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament by virtue of a win over league champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Huskies head to Lake Charles, La. for the 2023 Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Championships presented by Louisiana Travel and open play on Sunday, Mar. 5, at 7:30 p.m. against No. 7 seed New Orleans.
