CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Senior
Maks Klanjscek went off for a career-best 30 points but it wasn't enough as HCU had a rough shooting night as a team and fell 91-68 at the American Bank Center to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday night.
The Islanders (16-9, 9-3 SLC) got out to a quick 13-4 lead, thanks in large part to Terrion Murdix. The senior either scored or assisted five of the team's first six baskets.
Maks Klanjscek was the answer for HCU (7-18, 4-8 SLC), however, scoring 12 consecutive points for the Huskies and pulling the team back to within one, 15-14, with a floater from the top of the key with 13:27 on the clock.
TAMUCC scored the next eight points, pushing the score to 23-14, and then led by at least eight for more than nine minutes. The HCU deficit got as high as 12 during that stretch. Trailing 35-24 with 2:24 on the clock,
Andrew King knocked down a pair of free throws on the next possession while
Tristan Moore drained a three the next time down the floor, pulling HCU to within six, 35-29, with 1:54 to go in the half. The Islanders made four free throws over the course of their next two possessions before
Pierce Bazil knocked down a triple from the corner for a 39-32 score. Isaac Mushila closed out scoring in the half with two from the charity stripe for a 41-32 TAMUCC lead at the break.
Early in the second half, the Huskies deficit hovered around 10 for the first few minutes until buckets on three consecutive possession by TAMUCC pushed the Islander lead to 61-42 with 13:23 left on the clock. HCU was unable to get any closer than 15 the rest of the way as the Islanders shot over 50 percent from the floor in the second half and made 17-of-23 from the charity stripe.
Klanjscek led all players with a career-high 30 points, connecting on 9-of-18 from the floor, 5-of-11 from three-point range and 7-of-7 from the foul line. He also pulled down seven rebounds. The senior is 11-of-22 from behind the arc in his last two games.
King finished with 11 points, going 4-of-9 from the field.
Sam Hofman ended the night with a career-high five assists and also grabbed seven rebounds. The Huskies shot just 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the floor and 25 percent (8-of-32) from three.
TAMUCC was led by Mushila's double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds with the senior going a perfect 14-of-14 from the foul line. The Islanders were 28-of-56 (50 percent) for the game and 29-of-36 (80.6 percent) from the free throw line.
HCU heads north to central Texas for a Saturday, Feb. 11, matchup with UIW in San Antonio, Texas at 4:00 p.m. as it continues its current three-game road stretch.
