HOUSTON – HCU women's basketball welcomes the Nicholls Colonels to Sharp Gym Saturday afternoon for the first Southland meeting of the year between the two schools. Tipoff is scheduled for 2pm and can be watched live on ESPN+ with play-by-play from Garrett Jones and commentary from Hall of Fame coach Van Chancellor.
N'Denasija Collins and
Julija Vujakovic led HCU (9-12, 4-6 SLC) to their first SLC win in their last four tries Thursday night. Collins finished with another double-double, including a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds while Vujakovic finished with 15 points and team highs in assists with six and steals with three. The duo played the entire game.
Abbey Sutherland had another impressive offensive showing with 13 points while
Kennedy Wilson scored 10 points on 50 percent shooting from three-point distance.
Nicholls (4-16, 1-8 SLC) has struggled thus far through the conference schedule. Their lone win came in overtime against the Lamar Cardinals on January 12
th. The Huskies will look to extend their four-game winning streak against the Colonels on Saturday.
The Colonels have three players averaging double-figure scoring this season. Lexi Alexander leads the team with 13.6 ppg and is followed by Deonna Brister and Kyla Hamilton who average 13.1 and 10.7 respectively.
Collins is inching closer and closer to 1000 career points. She sits at 936 for her career after her career night against Northwestern State on Thursday. She is leading the Huskies in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14ppg and 7.3 boards per game and has six double-doubles this season. Vujakovic follows at 10.7 ppg while Wilson sits at 9.4 ppg.
HCU is back on the road next week with matchups against Texas A&M-Corpus on Thursday before traveling to San Antonio for a matchup with UIW on Saturday.
