HOUSTON – It's time, once again, for one of the happiest nights of the college basketball year with the HCU men's basketball team set to break out the 1970's era Hustlin' Husky throwback uniforms when the Huskies host Nicholls for a Southland Conference matchup in Sharp Gym on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m.
HCU (7-16, 4-6 SLC) fell its last time on the floor, dropping a 94-76 decision to Northwestern State on Thursday evening. The Huskies, trailing by 13 at the half, cut their deficit to seven in the second half but had their comeback attempt halted with a late run by the Demons.
Andrew King and
Maks Klanjscek led the Huskies with 17 points each in the loss while
Brycen Long added 13,
Bonke Maring had 11 and
Tristan Moore scored 10 off the bench.
Long finished the game 3-of-7 from three-point range and now has 68 made threes on the season. That ties him for 15
th in program history for made threes in a single season and puts him 23 behind the program record of 91, set by Bobby Sanders during the 1994-95 season. Long is averaging 2.96 made threes per game for the season and would need to average three per game over the final eight games of the regular season to break Sanders' record.
Nicholls (10-11, 5-4 SLC) didn't play this past Thursday as their scheduled home game vs. Texas A&M-Commerce was postponed due to icy weather conditions preventing TAMUC from traveling to Thibodaux. The Colonels have lost their last two games, falling on the road at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and at UIW last week.
A pair of senior guards lead the Colonels offensively with Caleb Huffman and Latrell Jones averaging 15.6 ppg and 14.9 ppg, respectively. Huffman is shooting 55.3 percent (135-of-244) from the floor and 42.9 percent (36-of-84) from beyond the arc. Senior forward Manny Littles leads the team on the boards, pulling down 7.4 rebounds per game. As a team, the Colonels are tops in the conference in forcing turnovers, ranking 11
th nationally with 17.33 turnovers forced per game while boasting a turnover margin of plus-3.7.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Garrett Jones providing play-by-play and Van Chancellor providing color commentary.
HCU is back on the road next week, first visiting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday, Feb. 9, before continuing on to San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 11, to face UIW.
